He just missed his target. A man was indeed arrested by the British police this Wednesday, November 9, after he threw eggs at King Charles III, and was then on the move in the north of England. British TV footage showed the monarch and his wife Camilla waving on a street in York, cheered on by Britons who came to greet them as three eggs crashed within inches of the pair.
“Shame on you !”
“This country was built on the blood of slaves,” the man behind the incident said before several police officers arrested him. The passers-by, who had come in their hundreds to greet the new king and his wife, replied: “Shame on you”. “God save the king– added some of them. King Charles, 73, and his wife Camilla, 75, attended the unveiling of a new statue of Queen Elizabeth II, the first since her death in September.
Charles III, who will be crowned in May, eight months after ascending to the throne, is far less popular than his late mother, whom Britons adored during her 70-year reign. After Elizabeth II’s death, however, she experienced a surge in popularity but remains less respected than her son William and his wife Kate.
