After controversies in 2020, the villain is no longer played by Johnny Depp and is now played by Mads Mikkelsen
Last week, the grand premiere of “Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets” took place, a new film in the Wizarding World franchise, known for introducing Harry Potter, the most famous little wizard in the world of books and cinemas.
Since before its debut, the production has been accompanied by numerous controversies involving the cast. One of his biggest controversies was the change of actor to the role of the villain Gellert Grindelwald, played byJohnny Depp in the second movie. However, this would not be the first time that the character’s interpreter undergoes changes.
Still in the first film, Grindelwald appeared in the form of Lord Percival Graves, played by Colin Farrell, a wizard who, according to the plot, had his appearance stolen by the antagonist. In “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”, the villain takes on his own face, and depp becomes responsible for bringing the iconic character to life.
After strong controversy of aggression against his ex-wife, the actress Amber Heard, Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed in November 2020 that Johnny Depp would no longer be part of the franchise and, in the same month, revealed that the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen would be the new person responsible for playing Grindelwald in theaters.
With the arrival of “Fantastic Beasts 3”, many fans expected the new movie to have some explanation about how the villain’s face changed between productions – but it didn’t.
Second Mikkelsen in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the reason behind the lack of explanation is that the fact would go beyond the fantasy narrative and, if justified in the film, could just be an “easter egg for reality”.
“That was very deliberate. everyone knows why [os atores mudaram]. The whole world knows why. It would almost be like an Easter egg for reality to point out that we’ve switched actors. We hope to drag them with the first scene and from there they accept this world.”
“Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets” features the powerful wizard Albus Dumbledore, played by Jude Lawallying with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) so they can confront the rising villain, Gelert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen), and thus restore peace.
