Critics called the book “a metaphysical thriller and afterlife noir that blurs the boundaries of different genres.”

Sri Lankan writer Shehan Karunatilaka has won the 2022 Booker Prize for his second novel, The Seven Moons Of Maali Almeida. The information appeared on the Instagram of the organizers of the award.

The writer won £50,000 for a novel that depicts the events of 1990 – the Sri Lankan civil war, when protagonist Maali Almeida wakes up dead with no idea who killed her.

Karunatilaka himself said that his book is about the evils of corruption, racial harassment and nepotism.

“I hope it will be read in Sri Lanka, learning from its history, and The Seven Moons Of Maali Almeida will be in the fantasy section of a bookstore and… will not be mistaken for realism or political satire,” said Karuntilaka. .
