20 must-have vintage pieces

Four experts entrusted us with their five decorative items: Clemens Krzentowski, co-founder of Kreo Gallery, antiques dealer Laurence Voeckler, interior designer Lauren B. Tardrew and artist and designer Marine Montagut.

Clemens Krzentowski. A fan of first editions

● The Lounge Chair and the Ottoman by Charles and Ray Eames

“In my eyes, it represents the ultimate in modern comfort. Its unusual design allows the body to relax and doze off. The combination of the headrest and footstool ottoman shows this pursuit of the ideal resting position. And the combination of bent wood and leather is very beautiful. It is not for nothing that it has inspired many designers. For those who cannot find original editions, they are still available on many websites and galleries, it has been reissued by Vitra.”

● Snoopy’s lamp, by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

“He has a really unexpected form. It has been reissued by Flos, but first editions are still available as there were a large number of pieces when it was created in 1967. It’s a real UFO to me.

● The Ball, by Helen von Boch

“Created in 1971 for Villeroy & Boch, this porcelain service with its elements, plates, bowls and mugs that come together to form a ball, is beautiful and clever;

● Ultrafragola mirror by Ettore Sottsass

“I love the objects designed by the early Memphis group, especially the use of colors and poor materials. There are still quite a few objects to hunt for from this period, including the Ultrafragola mirror by Ettore Sottsass, in its liquid form. But I’m also a big fan of the Super lamp on wheels by Martin Bedin, which was designed around the same time.”

● Stereo Channel RR 126, on the radio, by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

“This hi-fi cabinet is a real miracle. It symbolizes the perfect marriage of technology and design. Graphically, with its robot silhouette, it is exceptional. And in terms of use, it is exemplary, because it includes everything: radio, speakers, turntable. And besides, it moves thanks to its wheels.

● Dish by Charles-Jean Aviso

“Ceramics are the poor relation of the antiques industry. And yet, when you see Aviso’s work, you can only be captivated. His dishes, with frogs waiting at the water’s edge, flowers, incredible colors are treasures. Aviso was inspired by the techniques of the ceramic writer Bernard Palissy, and this created a form of artistic movement that was a turning point in the 19th century.e century. He was from Tours, like my mother’s family. As a result, this interest and this inclination towards his work is connected with my childhood. My parents, avid bargain hunters and antique dealers, spent a lot of time looking for her pieces.”

● Large woven rattan basket

“I really like the large woven rattan baskets found in conservatories. They often have a wooden base, which prevents moisture retention. They were used to store pillows, silks and shawls overnight.

● Flora table service

“More ceramics. But Flora’s table service is key. It’s the perfect base for making crazy tables. Then just add candle holders, silver metal forks. To mix styles and inspirations. The fact is that you don’t need to invest a lot of money to set unforgettable tables.

● Column by Delphine Massier

“Delphine Massier’s column with pink flamingos, with its butterflies and flowers, is one of the main pieces of ceramic production in Vallauris in the 19th century.e century. Of course, there are simpler and more affordable versions of these columns. Massier’s work amazes me. I discovered this when I was a child, and it is probably what prompted my calling as an antiquarian. The faux marble sides of their ceramics are also marvels. That’s my love.”

● Bamboo secretary

“There has been a craze for rattan and bamboo for ten years. And that is understandable. in this moment of anxiety, these natural substances induce calmness. I love when bamboo gets complicated. I fell in love with the little bamboo secretary from the 19th century.e century. With its lacquered doors and bamboo root legs, it’s gorgeous.”

● Superleggera chair by Gio Ponti

“For me, it is a mandatory condition that has entered the classical vocabulary. The delicacy of its execution, the design, the structural details with the rounded triangle overwhelm me. It’s a small sculpture reissued by Cassina. Apart from being very technical and light, it has a crazy charm, symbolizing all the craftsmanship of Gio Ponti, of whom I am a fan. My daughter is not called Gia for nothing…”

● Pottery, by Georges Jouvet

“I love the work of Georges Jouvet. To me, he has a unique way of approaching ceramics. It offers not objects, but sculptures. The ceramic wall lamp by Georges Jouvet is a treasure. It does not illuminate, it creates an atmosphere. Unfortunately, they are rare. On the other hand, his pottery can still be found in the auction room.’

● The triple candlestick, by Gio Ponti

“It’s impossible for me not to talk about this candlestick from the Gallia collection by Gio Ponti. He created it for Christofle, but unfortunately it is no longer in print. Sometimes you can still find them in the auction room. He has a very dreamy side. What is incredible for Gio Ponti is that he studied all the materials. Here it is silver metal, but he was also interested in wood, ceramics, always with a design that reflects a holistic understanding of the material.

● Rattan magazine rack by Gabriella Crespi

“I’m a big fan of this Italian designer whose creations are very seventies but also very sensual. I especially like his rattan furniture, especially coffee tables or even consoles and desks. I suggested myself a magazine rack found on the Selency website. It is a symbolic object for me that I am proud of. And I’m sure you can still find his original little pieces like mirrors, trays… And the good news is that Gubi is reissuing some of his furniture.”

● Elysian Buckles, by Pierre Paulin

“I love everything about Pierre Paulin. And I’m especially a fan of her Champs Elysee lights. They are both very organic, and very intense. There is an organized geometry to this lamp that can also be found in his Élysée armchair, with its proportions that are both complex and soft. You can find several original cases in the auction room. But if you really like Pauline, first of all you can easily buy his furniture, many of which are produced by Ligne Roset.”

● Artist’s palettes

“I’m crazy about it. There’s something interesting about the old palette of an anonymous artist, with its different layers of dry paint, brush marks… It’s exciting, it’s modest, it also tells a story. And it is a real decorative accessory, which is rarely highlighted. I like to display them on walls mixed in with other wonders, or placed on the floor against a wall to hide an outlet. Finding them is not so difficult. all you have to do is go to the markets regularly.

● Earth globes

“Another obsession. And this since childhood. I have always liked globes because it is a magical object. All trips are possible with him. Just rotate it to find its next destination. There are still old models in the markets, bright or not. I collect them. My favorite models are the 18th century modelse century on paper. Of course, they are rare. There is nothing more beautiful than a globe placed in a library or, if it is bright, in the night light of a distracted room.

● Greek inspired casts

“For me, the accumulation of Greek-inspired plasterwork in fine interiors is a must. The plaster white and the sculptural side give the room the feel of an artist’s studio. I find it very nice to put a bust or a leg on the armor to highlight it. And it’s even better in front of a green painted wall. Not an easy part to find. There are a few at the Saint-Ouen flea market from time to time. I look for it when I go on a trip. This is how, unexpectedly, I found the head of Aphrodite in Japan. I brought it back to France and it arrived intact, which was a miracle. I love it so much that I had a mold made from this head to make a porcelain wall hanging. »

● Old rugs

“These are carpets that go into any interior. It makes a big impact by arranging several very large ones in the same room, playing with geometric patterns, faded or even bright colors. It really brings joy to the living room, as well as an ethnic touch.”

● Previous voices

“I’ve loved the old voices for a long time. I catch them everywhere I go, especially in Italy and Portugal. I love what they stand for, thank you for the wish. And, in addition, they are very beautiful objects, often in the shape of a heart, in plain metal or silver metal, which can be displayed at home. I have a lot of them and I have them hanging on the wall. It’s graphic and beautiful. I’m so crazy about it that I edited my own porcelain ex-voto.
