The award jury chose “courage and insight” in which French writer Annie Ernault revealed “alienation and collective limitations of personal memory”.
French writer Annie Ernault has been awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature. This decision by the members of the Swedish Academy was announced on Thursday, October 6.
The award jury chose “courage and surgical insight” in which Erno “reveals the roots, alienation and collective limitations of personal memory.”
Almost half a century of racing
The first novel of the native Yvto in Normandy was published in 1974. It, like many subsequent works of the writer, reflects the actual episodes of his biography. As Erno said earlier, writing is a political act that opens the eyes to social inequality. Erno’s works include Women, Events, Years, Memories of a Woman and others.
Annie Erno is the owner of many literary awards. In particular, in 1984 he received the Renaudo Prize, in 2008 – the Marguerite Duras Prize for the book Years. In the same year, Ernault was awarded the François Mauriac Prize for this work and the French Language Prize for total creativity.
Writer’s work inspires filmmakers. So, the French film The Event, based on the novel of the same name by Annie Erno, received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. Like the novel, the film tells the story of a student who everyone predicts for a bright future and found out she was pregnant. At the same time, abortions were prohibited in post-war France – a prison term awaited both the woman and the doctor who agreed to perform the operation. The film The event directed by Audrey Divan is really an event: the Golden Lion went to a strong feminist film based on a novel by a writer who dedicated her work, based on strong personal experiences, to women – with all their emotions, aspirations, problems and struggles.
Previous award winners
In 2021, the award went to Tanzanian-born prose writer Abdulrazak Gurne, and in 2020, to US poet Louise Gluck. In 2019, the award was awarded to two laureates at the same time: the Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk received the award for 2018, and the Austrian Peter Handke for 2019. This is due to the fact that in 2018 the Literature Prize was not awarded due to the #MeToo scandal at the Swedish Academy.
In 2017, British writer of Japanese origin Kazuo Ishiguro was the laureate of the award. In 2016, the American musician Bob Dylan received the award, a year earlier – the Belarusian writer Svetlana Aleksievich. From 1901 to 2021, a total of 118 people have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, including 16 women.
On October 7, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in Oslo. On October 10, the decision on awarding the prize in the field of economics will be announced in Stockholm. The value of the awards in 2022 is 10 million Swedish kronor (in terms of 921 thousand euros). Awarding winners to all six Nobel Prizes takes place according to tradition on December 10 – the day of Alfred Nobel’s death.
