Many have pointed out the striking resemblance between the wife of the short-lived King Edward VIII and the wife of Prince Harry in recent official portraits of the Sussexes. But the similarities don’t end there.
Meghan Markle in a monochrome red dress. The new portrait of the Duchess of Sussex, next to her husband Harry, is already causing a lot of noise. But with the channel we also draw a parallel with another duchess who was also marked by scandals. Her name is Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor and wife of King Edward VIII. The same man who abdicated the throne of England to marry his sweetheart, an American divorcee in her forties.
In one of the new photos of the Sussexes, Meghan Markle wears a silk blouse with an American neckline and flowing trousers by Another Tomorrow. All accessorized with a silk scarf and a pair of gold earrings. An almost identical outfit to the one Wallis Simpson wore in the 1971 photo portrait. And like the Duchess of Windsor at the time, Prince Harry’s wife opted for slicked-back hair and a center parting.
The second photo of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry also looks very similar to the portrait of Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII. In black and white, the Crown’s two most rebellious couples appear in profile, gazing toward the horizon. Coincidence or not, the similarity of the portraits is disturbing.
Americans and divorcees
However, this is not the first time that Meghan Markle remembers the appearance of the cursed lover of the British crown. Archie and Lilybeth’s mother has already modeled some of her outfits in Wallis Simpson clothing several times.
There’s no escaping the fact that the two duchesses share a lot in common, aside from fashion. Both are American, divorced and met their prince at the age of 34, according to The DailyMail: . But above all, both made the British monarchy tremble. Meghan Markle forced Prince Harry to stay away from the royal family, and Wallis Simpson caused King Edward VIII to abdicate.

Megan’s assurance vs. Wallis’ discretion
More than eighty years separate the two women. If Meghan Markle has doubled her confidence today, Wallis Simpson seemed to lack self-confidence back then. After Edward VIII abdicated in 1936, when asked by a friend, he explained what made him spend so much time on his toilet; “My husband left everything for me. I’m not a beautiful woman, so the only thing I can do is dress better than everyone else.”
During his long exile, Wallis Simpson never complained to the royal family. Unlike Meghan Markle, who did not hesitate to fight the Windsor clan, especially during her shocking interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. The Duchess of Sussex, however, received a much warmer welcome from Buckingham. In particular, he had the right to celebrate a royal marriage and received the title of Royal Highness before it was removed after Megxit. A privilege that Wallis Simpson did not have, much to the chagrin of her husband.
