Penelope Cruz. “At my age, it makes sense that half or three-quarters of the characters I play are mothers.”

On the red carpet of the 79th Venice Film Festival, the hypnotic Penelope Cruz came to present. L’Immensita, by Emmanuel Criallese in the official competition. She plays Clara, a mother on the brink of depression whose suffering brings her closer to her daughter.

In 2021, he was in the bay to support two films. Official competitionBy Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat, and Madras Parallels by Pedro Almodovar, the latter won the award for best actress. Penelope Cruz was the guest of honor this year at an intimate and joyful dinner organized by Chanel inside the walls of Harry’s Bar. On that occasion, he gave us his “quiet” impressions.

Madame Figaro: What state of mind did you find Venice in this year?

Penelope Cruz. After everything that happened last year, winning an award for Pedro’s film, as well as a great reception Official competition, and now back with these two movies that people seem to love. It’s very exciting for all of us to see.

Can you tell us a few words about your role? L’Immensita ?

I play a woman who tries to survive at home in a non-working family. He feels trapped in a life that does not make him happy. She feels a very strong bond with her daughter, who also feels trapped in her own body, but for different reasons. So mother and daughter bond through this anxiety. The only way for them to escape is to dance and sing together. The television in their home is like a window, another dimension of escape.

You are brilliant when you play a mother, are these the safest roles for an actress?

At my age, it makes sense that half or three-quarters of the characters I play are mothers. It will never be too much. If we had to make movies on one topic without getting tired of it, it would be family. It’s endless.

How would you describe your collaboration with Chanel?

I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Chanel for so many years. Not even Virginia (Wiard, editor’s note) has worked with the brand for thirty years. So it’s like a big family. I am truly honored and grateful to work with the team.
