Details of the case have not been disclosed. However, lawyers for both sides confirmed the settlement.
Streaming platform Netflix has settled a libel suit related to the movie The Queen’s Move and USSR chess grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili. The first female grandmaster in the history of chess filed a five million dollar lawsuit against the company in September 2021, writes the Daily Mail.
According to the grandmaster, the show disparaged him for a line in the latter claiming that he did not play against the boys. In fact, in 1968, when the events of the series took place, she had to face 59 male rivals.
Netflix filed an application to dismiss the lawsuit, but the judge granted Chess’ application.
“The parties are pleased that the issue has been resolved,” said lawyer Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, who represents Gaprindashvili.
“We are pleased that the issue has been resolved,” a Netflix spokesperson added in a brief statement.
“The fact that a show is a work of fiction does not absolve Netflix of liability for defamation if all the elements of defamation are otherwise present,” added the US District Judge Virginia A Phillips.
Recall that in September 2021, the five-time USSR chess champion said that, among other things, he competed with famous grandmasters such as: Dragoljub Velimirovic, Svetozar Gligoric, Paul Keres, Boyan Kuraitsa, Boris Spassky, Viswanathan Anand and Mikhail Tal.
