UNESCO plans to include Odessa in the World Heritage List

The organization has mobilized international experts to consider Ukraine’s application as soon as possible.

UNESCO supports Ukraine’s application for the inclusion of Odessa in the World Heritage List. This was announced on August 30 by the press service of the organization following the meeting of the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko with the Director General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay in Paris.

During the visit, the head of the Ministry of Culture said that Ukraine will apply for the inclusion of Odessa in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

It is known that the city is only a few tens of kilometers from the front line and has already been shelled. In particular, on July 24, part of the large glass roof and windows of the Odessa Museum of Fine Arts, opened in 1899, was destroyed.

“At Ukraine’s request, UNESCO has mobilized international experts to provide technical support to the country so that the nomination can be immediately considered by Member States sitting on the World Heritage Committee,” the release said.

In addition, the Committee will be encouraged to inscribe the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyiv and Lviv on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian borscht cooking culture was included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in need of immediate protection.
