“Satanic Verses”Salman Rushdie’s most famous and most controversial work, ranked among Amazon’s top-selling books in USAafter the writer was stabbed last Friday while attending a conference in the state New York.
Last Tuesday, the work topped the list of best-selling books in the section “Contemporary Literature and Fiction” and was in 27th place in the overall bestseller list on the e-commerce portal.
Originally published in 1988, The Satanic Verses drew the ire of many Muslims, who saw it as an insult to the Quran, for including a cartoon character inspired by the prophet. Muhammad- and forced it to be banned in many countries.

A few months after the publication of The Satanic Verses, Ayatollah Khomeini Iran issued a fatwa calling for death Salman Rushdie and a multi-million dollar bounty was placed on his head, forcing the criminal into hiding for years.
Salman Rushdie belongs to a family of Muslim tradition, but did not profess this religion. “I never considered myself a religiously obsessed writer until religion began to persecute me,” he wrote in the article. Despite the controversy, The Satanic Verses received widespread acclaim and won the Whitbread Award, but the backlash against the book continued to mount.
About two decades Salman Rushdiewho has lived under the protection of bodyguards for decades, lives in New York and was due to give a lecture last Monday at the Chautauqua Institute, a cultural center in western New York.

Attack on the author of The Satanic Verses
Salman Rushdie was attacked last Friday by a young Lebanese American arrested and charged with attempted murder.
The writer, who was on stage during a literary conference in the town of Chautauqua, received several stab wounds and remains in the hospital with severe injuries: he has seriously damaged at least his liver, arm and eye, which could have been lost, but he is progressing positively and no longer needs artificial lung ventilation.
According to anonymous sources cited by local media, the Indian-born writer was interviewed by police officers at the hospital and was “eloquent”, although nothing that he could say about the attack came up.
