More than 4000 filmmakers, including Oscar, Bafta and Emmy, have signed an open letter, announcing the conclusion of cooperation at Israeli film celebrations and state -related companies.
More than four thousand actors, directors and workers of the film industry have supported the Apertzikhniki film organization’s initiative for Palestine, which says a boycott of Israeli’s film institutions, which, in their opinion, is “involved in genocide and apartheid related to Palestine residents.”
According to NBC News, besides signators are Hollywood stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton, Joaquin Phoenix, Olivia Kolman, Javier Bartem, Elliot Page, as well as famous director Yorgos Lantimos, Ava Duvernie and Jonathan Glazer.
In an open letter, artists said they would refuse to cooperate with the celebrations of Israel, theaters and manufacturers who cooperate with the Israeli government or justify its actions. It is emphasized that the boycott does not apply to the individual citizens of Israel.
The document also mentioned the UN International Court’s decision, which in January 2024 recognized the existence of a “genuine genocide threat” in gas and confirmed Israel’s illegalism in Palestinian territories.
The initiative became part of a broader discussion in the USA and Europe in Israel’s actions after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
Organizers note that the 1980s initiative was an example for the current campaign, when top filmmakers, along with Stephen Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, refused to cooperate in South Africa because of an apartheid.
Earlier it was reported that the Israel Defense Army (IDF) announced the creation of a new humanitarian zone in the city of Khan-Junis south of the Gaza sector.
