July 28 marks the 201st anniversary of the independence of Peru by Don José de San Martin. On this day, let’s take a look at some Peruvian and foreign designers inspired by this country to create collections full of personality.

Ani Alvarez-Calderon

The seasoned designer paid tribute to the Sipan culture with a collection showcased at the Fall/Winter LIF Week 2017. And this year, she was inspired by the Shipibo Konibo culture to create a collection full of traditional community designs. Their garments, among which long dresses and jackets stand out, are made from colorful hand-painted fabrics.

Annais Yukra

The Peruvian designer honors her roots with colorful pieces of clothing made entirely in the country of her birth. Her Pachamama (2020) collection was born from the documentary Sembrando Vida, which tells four stories of women from the highlands of Puno and their connection to the land. They fight women. About his crocheted products, the designer comments: “It’s a way to keep the tradition alive.”

Naeem Khan

Colorful, elegant and full of details costumes. The Indian-American designer presented his Cusco-inspired collection at New York Fashion Week in February 2018. The collection came about after his visit to the Inca city in 2017, when he was able to appreciate the craftsmanship, textile traditions and wonders of the city.

She is perhaps one of the most famous designers in Peru, because she always finds in her country the source of inspiration that she needs to create. Correa captured Peruvian altarpieces, nature and Peruvian textiles in his creations.

Peruvian designer Ana María Guiulfo stands out for its colorful prints. In honor of Peru, Guiulfo presented “Naza reloaded” (2017) on the runway of LIF Week, fashion and art in a collection that reinterprets pre-Hispanic culture. The designer was inspired to create his collection by the Nazca exhibition presented at MALI.

Jirko Siviric

The Ica-based designer created the Kuyayki (2020) collection, inspired by the traditions of Ayacucho. His “comfortable” clothes have a modern and urban approach. In addition, his pieces stand out in that some are colorful while others are neutral in black and white. The material for his collection was alpaca, cotton and recycled thread from plastic bottles.

Edward Venero

Color explosion. This is how you can describe all the garments created by Cusco-based designer Edward Venero. His pieces always retain their Peru-inspired designs. In short, this is a modern interpretation of Peruvian clothing. Venero emphasizes that his collections are “genderless”, meaning they do not retain gender and can be used by anyone who feels identified with his creation.
