1. Protagonist inspired by a real person
Few people know but protagonist Joe Gardner was inspired by Peter Archera music teacher who taught 34 years at a Bronx school in New York and retired in 2020. During the development of the film, the principals sought to faithfully portray the reality lived by the teacher, even visiting their classroom to observe details of the school environment.
The choice to make Joe a jazz musician came from the idea that this musical genre requires true passion, which would help build a more authentic character. In addition, Jazz’s strong connection with African American culture contributed to the decision to make him the first black protagonist in Pixar’s history (via ABC7 Los Angeles).
2. Why is soul 22 is called this?

During Joe’s journey, he has known soul 22 who has long tried to find his vocation before incarnating on Earth. According to the producer JONAS RIVERAthe number was chosen as a joke, without a specific reason, but with the idea that, as each soul is unique, they could be identified by numbers, which also allowed to address a complex theme lightly and accessible.
Although presented as a random detail, the number carries symbolic meanings: 22 It was the number of films released by Pixar before ‘soul’, besides being the number of creative rules that guide the studio employees in the process of developing the stories.
3. Participation of Merida de Valente

In the hall of all things, a space where souls need to discover their “life spark” to gain the right to be born on earth, Joe and 22 observe different souls exploring activities in search of this spark. In one scenes, a soul appears practicing arc and arrow and, when hitting the target, completes its final circle, indicating that it found its motivation.
The sequence is a reference to the ‘brave’ animation, also from Pixar, in which the Merida protagonist is known for her ability with the bow.
4. Easter Eggs

As is tradition in Pixar movies, ‘Soul – An Adventure with Soul’ is also full of Easter Eggs spread throughout the narrative. In one of the scenes where Joe and 22 look for the spark that would arouse the desire to live in the soul, several visual references to other studio productions appear, such as the ‘Up – Altas Adventures’ balloon, the Pizza Planet car of ‘Toy Story’, the number A113, present in all Pixar movies, and the iconic lamp of the company logo.
In the big before, the universe where souls prepare before being born, it is possible to see the statue of Walt Disney holding hands with Mickey. Already in the 22 shelter, the ball of Pixar appears among its belongings, while in New York, the number 2319, used as code in Monsters SA, appears in a subway car, which also features a Banner from Brang, responsible for changing Riley’s family in ‘Fun Mind’.
Finally, in a scene in the city streets, a poster displays the name Porto Rosso, a reference in the unpublished film, ‘Luca’.
5. Swedish sculpture as inspiration

The pre-life, the central scenario of animation, was created as a neutral and original space to avoid religious interpretations of the afterlife. According to the producer Dana Murray“This is specifically why we were not to ‘Beyond Life’, because that is where most religions have different thoughts. So that’s why we created this world, the preview, because it seemed a neutral territory” (via Rolling Stones).
The Codirector PETE DOCTER revealed that it was inspired by a Swedish sculpture and the works of Charles Schulzcreator of ‘Peanuts’, to shape the counselors and other visual elements of this world, creating a playful and philosophical environment at the same time.
