Subsequent to Joel’s death in the second season of ‘The Last of Us’, Druckmann responds to Pedro Pascal’s possible presence in the continuation
The night of last Sunday, 25, marked the closing of the second season of ‘The Last of Us’, an inspired series of the homonymous survival game. The new wave of episodes focused on Ellie’s journey, guided by his revenge after Joel’s death, which takes place in the third episode of the season. With this, questions quickly arose among fans about the possible participation of Pedro Pascalinterpreter of the character, in the third season.
In response, Neil Druckmanndirector and screenwriter of the series, commented on the character’s future, indicating that Joel can return through flashbacks. According to him, during the development of the season, it even emerged a narrative involving Joel and Tommy’s childhood.
“I would not imagine that we would have a short story about Joel’s father before we write the season, so there it is,” he said.
The statement suggests that the character can reappear in memories of Ellie, Abby or even Tommy, especially at times that address trauma and episodes of violence experienced by her childhood. “You can’t predict these things,” added the filmmaker.
What to wait for the third season?
The synopsis of the third season of ‘The Last of Us’ has not yet been released by HBO, but because it is a direct adaptation of the game ‘The Last of Us Part II’ (2020), it is already possible to get a sense of the next events that will be portrayed in the show.
Following the plot of the game, the new phase should focus on Abby’s journey after Joel’s death, offering the public a new perspective of events. The character moves away from his own colleagues shortly after the crime and goes towards the aquarium to find Mel and Owen. On the way, it is captured by Serafites, but can escape with the help of two children, who should also have a prominent space in the plot.
As in the game, the season should share the narrative between Abby and Ellie, following the dilemmas, conflicts and parallel journeys of the two to the final clash in the theater, considered one of the most impactful moments of the work. In addition, with a more spaced timeline compared to the game, the series should introduce new conflicts and developments.
Although it does not yet have an official date confirmed, the sequence is expected to reach the streaming catalog in 2027, maintaining the same two -year interval between the pre -seasons of 2023 and 2025 that, it is worth remembering, are available in the Max catalog.
