Joel’s end could have been different, according to creators

According to the creators of ‘The Last of Us’, the farewell of Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel, could have followed another way; look!

The last episode of the second season of ‘The Last of Us’, live-action adaptation of the same name, premiered last Sunday, 25, ending the events that adapt part of the history of the second game. The season, which generated great repercussion since the premiere, was marked by Joel’s death in the third episode. However, according to the creators of the series, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazinthis outcome could have been completely different.

In an interview, Druckmann He stated that both even discussed possibilities to avoid the death of the character or even add it, saying, “We discussed everything. Even what would happen if we didn’t kill Joel, just to understand.”

“Everything needs to be at the table. We need to question each decision to ensure that we are making the best choices for this adaptation,” he added.

According to the filmmaker, there was an attempt to imagine other narrative paths, even considering creating an alternative line that prolonged Joel’s presence and his relationship with Ellie. However, the idea was quickly discarded.

“The more we argued, the more it seemed wrong. It sounded like something just to please, for commercial reasons, keeping the audience comfortable for longer. But Joel’s death is the starting point of this story. It drives Ellie’s journey. Without that, narrative simply would not happen.”

The Creator also said that conversations about this possibility were short and poorly productive, because, according to them, they already knew that “we were forcing something that made no sense. So we didn’t even move forward with these ideas.”

Remember that the two full seasons of ‘The Last of Us’ are available in the HBO Max catalog.

More about Joel

Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascalit is one of the central characters of the plot, being introduced in the first season as a bad phase smuggler by the losses and collapse of society, which becomes a paternal figure for Ellie during their journey through the United States devastated by a pandemic.

The reason for the death of the character occurs after he saves Abby (Kaitlyn Duty) Without imagining that she is the daughter of the doctor he killed years earlier, during the attack on the headquarters of the St. Mary Hospital in Salt Lake City. At the time, the man sacrificed not only part of the rebel faction, but also the chance of a possible cure for the cordyceps fungus infection to protect Ellie at any cost.

His death, both in the game and in the series, not only shocks fans, but also represents the catalyst for the history of revenge and maturity that leads the events of the second season, with his absence redefining Ellie’s trajectory, played by Bella Ramsey.
