Eurovision-2025: New policies have been established for viewers and participants

Delegations are prohibited from using any flags other than officials, while the audience will have more freedom in this regard.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has announced updated policies for the use of flags in Eurovision 2025, which will be held at the Swiss Basel.

The main change is a strict restriction for the contest participants: only the country’s official flag whose delegation representative is allowed to be used on stage and at official events. The flags should be provided by the organizer – Swiss Television Company SRG SSR.

Other flags, including rainbow (LGBT+), nebinarian or flags of other states, are prohibited. Political acts, such as the presentation of the Ukrainian flag, which took place in the competition in 2022 in unity after the start of an entire war, were not allowed.

For violating these policies, penalties are given, including possible dialification, although EBU does not specify specific consequences. Organizers emphasize the desire to maintain the “balance between the event’s self -expression and neutrality.”

At the same time, more honest requirements were introduced for the audience. Visitors are allowed to bring any flags, other than those prohibited by Swiss law (for example, racist, discriminant or extremist symbol).

This means that flags of countries that do not participate in the competition, including the Palestine flag or even the Russian flag, may appear in the hall – despite the fact that Russia has been removed from participation in Ukraine. The organizers explained this by wanting to respect freedom of speech, which is one of Switzerland’s major values.

Earlier it was reported that EBU has announced new policies that will operate on Eurovision 2025 in the city of Basel’s Swiss.
