A group of characters that came up in Marvel’s comics are about to debut in theaters: Thunderbolts, who title the newest feature film in Marvel Film Universe (MCU), with a change: the addition of an asterisk at the end of the title.
Announced in 2022, the film is scheduled to premiere on May 2, 2025. In the synopsis, there is the explanation of the group’s goal in the narrative: “Arrested in a deadly trap, seven outcasts disappointed are forced to embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their past.”
But who are Thunderbolts? Recreio explains below the origin of the group and presents the members of their varied formations; Check it out!
The emergence of thunderbolts
Team that emerged through the creativity of Kurt Busiekand Mark BagleyThunderbolts made their first appearance at HQ ‘The Incredible Hulk #449’, published in January 1997.
At origin, Thunderbolts was the name given by Baron Zemo (under the code name Citizen V) to the group formed by him who gathered as members the villains beetle, lunar rock, Colombina, Goliath and shipowner, previously known as masters of terror, who disguised as heroes and adopted the Personas Mach-IV, Meteorita, Soprano, Atlas and Tecno, respectively.
This is because the real intention of the creation of Thunderbolts came from Baron Zemo’s desire to obtain confidential Shield information for world domination, although there is also an editorial motive, as at the time the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and other heroic teams were trapped in the Heroes Saga Renascem. Lacking heroes in that universe, the thunderbolts were created to be Marvel’s new flagship and, in the comics, eventually boarded various missions as if they were the “substitutes” of the Avengers – even if their actions were poorly heroic, as, besides threats, they used violent tricks like torture and murders to keep the world saved.
However, over the missions, some members ended up leaving villainy aside and hanging more to heroism, causing, after reformulations and various adventures, thunderbolts definitely became a group of antiheroes, as despite helping the world to be a better place, use dubious methods or has ambiguous goals.
Several teams?
Yes! Thunderbolts had more members besides Mach-IV (beetle), meteorite (lunar rock), soprano (Colombina), Atlas (Goliath) and Tecno (shipowner), known as the original members.
It turns out that after the defeat of Zemo, the thunderbolts had new formations, being corrupted; Like Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts, which featured Lunar Rocha (Karla Sofen), Soprano (Melissa Gold), Mercenary (Lester), Termination (Robbie Baldwin), Radioactive Man (Chen Lu), Swordshop III (Andreas von Strucker) and Venom (Mac Gargon); and heroic, such as the leader by Gavião Archer (Clint Barton), which is members Miss America (America Chavez), Spectrum (Monica Rambeau), Persuasion (Kara Killgrave) and powerful (Vítor Álvarez).
In MCU, the team will once again be different. This is because the thunderbolts of the big screen are: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red guardian (David Harbor), Training, (Olga Kurylenko), American agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).
