Find out how Joel’s actions taken in the past ended up turning their destination into the game ‘The Last of Us Part II’
The second season of ‘The Last of Us’ has the days told to debut! Scheduled to air next Sunday, 13, at HBO and Max, the plot will adapt the second game of the Naughty Dog franchise to PlayStation, promising to bring epic moments of the game by exploring the consequences of what the destination ended up reserving to Joel Miller after the events presented in the first season.
This is because, as in the first game, in the initial season Joel ends up suffering losses that turn him into a cold man – until he meets Ellie, because after his way crossed with that of the girl, he ends up gaining a new purpose and sees the dark that he lived by hope, leading him to make a decision that will forever impact the future of humanity.
To understand how this shakes Joel’s fate in the game ‘The Last of Us Part II’ and can result in the way he will be portrayed in the new season of the series, it is necessary to remember what happened in the character’s past:
A trip to the past
Both in the game and in the series, Joel is a single father who eventually witnesses the brutal death of his only daughter, Sarah Miller, amid the chaos caused by the outbreak of a pandemic that came to light by mutation of a fungus called Cordyceps, which transforms the body and nature of humans infected by using them as hosts.
After two decades of this tragedy, the world is controlled by Fedra, which keeps the living in quarantine to avoid new infected. In this reality, Joel works as a smuggler and ends up accepting the mission of taking a girl out of the quarantine zone, aiming to get her to the headquarters of the fireflies, a group of rebels, which acts as a revolutionary militia, at the hospital in Salt Lake City. There, Ellie would be used to create a cure against Cordyceps, after all, she is the only human who had been infected with the fungus and survived.
On a longer trip than Joel predicted to take her to the scene, he and she end up facing infected and desperate situations that make them create a connection, which the stronger gets, the more it resembles the dynamics of father and daughter. So when they arrive at the hospital in Salt Lake City and he discovers that Ellie would be killed in an attempt to save all humanity, Joel ends up killing all the fireflies he finds along the way and takes Ellie far away from the place to save the life of the girl who had become so important to him.
When they left the building, Ellie was unconscious, as she had already been anesthetized for the procedure. In recovering consciousness, Ellie listens from Joel that they were dismissed by fireflies, as she had no way to help with healing. Although she is suspicious of the truth of what he says, the duo ends up ending the subject.
What happens to Joel in ‘The Last of Us Part II’?
Already in ‘The Last of US Part II’ five years have been set since this event. Joel and Ellie live with Joel’s brother Tommy, his wife Maria, the couple’s son and other survivors in Jackson, Wyoming, where they have quiet days compared to all they have faced in the past.
Still, there, Joel and Ellie’s relationship ends up shaken, as Ellie discovers the truth about Joel’s choice and feels betrayed, and thinks her purpose was taken from her. As much as they make up, they end up seeing the relationship comes to an end when Joel ends up finding Abby during a patrol mission.
Joel and Tommy end up saving the girl from a horde of infected, and as a result, she eventually housed them in a mansion, after all, they were in the middle of a blizzard. There, the pair performs for Abby and her friends, and during the description, Abby already shows them, as Joel was responsible for killing her father, Jerry Anderson, one of the fireflies surgeons who would do the procedure with Ellie years ago and, as a result, she leaves for the pair’s attack. While Tommy is erased by the young woman’s allies, she begins a long torture session with Joel that only ends when Ellie arrives at the scene, as the girl witnesses Joel to be killed with a golf club.
In the game, Joel’s death takes place early on, being kicked for a revenge mission that guides the whole game of the game, after all, Ellie is willing to do whatever he finds necessary to get Abby to pay what he did in the same coin.
