What are webtoons?

Discover what they are and what is the origin of the famous webtoons, often used as inspiration for the creation of doramas

If you are a fan of K-Dramas, better known in Brazil as “South Korean doramas”, you have certainly heard that a particular production was an adaptation of a webtoon. But, after all, what are the “webtoons” and what is their origin? Recreation explains you!

What are webtoons?

Basically, webtoons are South Korea’s comic stories, also known as “Manhwas”, which are published directly online. As explained by the Tangerina Portal, its origin is recent, dated 2003, after platforms such as the Daum and Naver create pages dedicated exclusively to the publication of comics.

Thus, numerous authors began to share their works on these pages regularly, increasingly gaining a solid fans base. These publications, however, only began to overtake South Korean borders in 2010, with the arrival of new platforms that began to translate comics into English, enabling increased popularity.

Although webtoons have a design technique similar to manga, making many people confuse both formats, they have some clear differences that facilitate differentiation.

What is the difference between webtoon and manga?

Even though it is also easy to find manga online, they are usually published in physical media, with black and white designs and the direction of oriental reading (from right to left).

Webtoons are published directly on the internet in the vertical format, which can be colorful or not, where each episode always adopts the infinite reading formed – as a way to adapt more to computers, tablets and cell phones, as explained by Heekyoung Cho In the article “The Webtoon: a New Form for Graphic Narrative”.

Webtoons Adaptations

With the webtoons becoming a huge success inside and outside South Korea, the works also caught the attention of the film industry, starting numerous adaptations for both series and anime.

In the k-dramas industry, this practice is extremely common to this day. Among the titles that pumped internationally and are based on webtoons, are: “True Beauty”, “Love Alarm”, “ItaEwon Class”, “What happened to Secretary Kim?”, “Extra -ordary You”, “All of Us Are Dead”, “In spite of everything, love”, “my id is gangamnam Beauty” and more.

In addition to watching the doramas on streaming platforms like Viki and Netflix, you can also read complete webtoons on different platforms, such as Tapas, Webtoon, Manta, Lezhin, among others.
