Snow White’s old live-action that no one remembers

With the release of the new Live-action of Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and directed by Marc Webbthe story of the most classic princess of fairy tales returns to the world spotlight. However, while many believe this new adaptation has as its sole reference to the 1937 animation, the truth is that the story of the memorable character has much older origins.

Before Walt Disney Revolutionize animation with “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937), the iconic plot of the white -skinned princess as snow had already gained life in theaters. What few know is that, in 1916, the first film adaptation of the tale was released, a dumb feature film directed by the American filmmaker J. SEARLE DAWLEYand starring Marguerite Clark in the role of the protagonist, alongside Dorothy Cummingwho played the bad queen, called in the first live action of Queen Brangomar.

Although many think that the 1937 version was the pioneer, the young man’s story poisoned by an apple and saves by a kiss comes from long before. The origin of Snow White is the tales of Grimm Brotherspublished between 1817 and 1822, based on the German oral tradition.

The 1916 production, although inspired by the classical narrative, had a great influence of a 1912 play, also starring Clark. The film was successful at the time, and it was one of the sessions that marked the youth of Walt Disney. At just 15 years old, he watched the screening at Kansas City Star, in which the projection was made on a suspended screen at the center of the auditorium.

Synopsis

The synopsis of the feature, according to the American Film Institute (AFI), was: “Snow White Princess was the daughter of a queen named Imbegen, who once stung her finger and shook him through the window, spilling a drop of blood in the snow. Production

Also according to AFI, the outdoor scenes of the film were recorded in Georgia, more specifically in the Savannah region, after bad weather prevented filming in Atlanta, as initially planned. According to records of the time, the forest scenes were real, while the interiors were running at Famous Players studio in New York, located at 221 West Twenty-Sixth Street.

In addition, “Snow White” was a milestone for Paramount as he became his first six -roll movie. Originally conceived to have five, the director Dawley It ended up expanding the duration due to the large amount of images, considered beautiful by the filmmaker, captured during production.

The impact of the work was so great that, years later, Disney He considered it “a perfect story,” and it was this memory that led him to choose Snow White to be his first animated feature film.
