Estonian rappper Tommy Cash has been accused of using stereotypes about Italians in his competitive song Espresso Macchiato.
Estonian performer Tommy Cash, who introduced the country to Eurovision 2025, was in the midst of a strong scandal because of his competitive song Espresso Macchiato. The inhabitants of Italy are angry because of its content and are called the artist’s disqualifying.
According to The Guardian, the Italian Codacons Consumer Association turned to the European Language Union, saying that Estonian song was offensive to Italian culture. It contains stereotypes about mafia, paste and coffee, and also hints on the connection of wealthy Italians with crime.
In particular, there are lines in the song: “It’s sweating like Mafiosi, and life is like spaghetti – heavy until you cook it.”
Representatives of the organization have emphasized that the composition is not only the re -reproduction of the cliche, but also “praises” the life of the mafia and shows the luxury associated with the crime.
In a commentary on the Italian radio station, Rai Radio2 noted that he did not insult Italians and, on the contrary, was a culture of the country:
“I really believe in this song. There is something that is here. I love italian, design and coffee, so I didn’t think it could cause such a resonance.”
To date, the European Language Union has not commented on possible disqualification. But the anger around Tommy Cash performance is growing not just because of his song.
Mang -singing avoids statements about the war in Ukraine and cooperates with Russian artists. The director of his competitive number was Russian Alina Pyazov, and in 2021 he visited Annexed Crimea.
Earlier it was reported that Italy was forced to change his representative to EUROVISION-2025, held in May in the Swiss Basel.
