5 films nominated for the 2025 Oscar that you need to watch

One of the most anticipated events of every year is approaching, the Oscars 2025! Thus, the Academy of Feature Film Arts and Science (AMPAS) finally announced the productions nominated to win the gold statuette. After two postponements due to environmental incidents in Los Angeles, this Thursday, the 23rd, the list of nominations was released.

Therefore, RECREIO separated a list of five film nominations from the most renowned names in world cinema for viewers. Check it out!

1. I’m Still Here

Starring Fernanda Torres (Eunice Paiva), “I’m Still Here” is an adaptation of the autobiography of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, and tells the story of former federal deputy Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), who disappears after being taken by plainclothes soldiers during the military dictatorship of the 70s in Brazil. The plot follows Eunice and her five children with the former politician in an incessant search for the truth about the fate of her husband and father, which spans decades, forcing them to reinvent themselves and chart a new future.

Directed by renowned Brazilian director Walter Salles“I’m Still Here” received 3 nominations for the 2025 Oscar, one of which was the most important of the awards, “Best Film”. The film is showing in cinemas across Brazil.


2. Wild Robot

“Wild Robot” is directed by Chris Sanders to accompany a ROZZUM robot from unit 7134 that, after a shipwreck, ends up on an island inhabited only by animals — which see it as an enemy being, sometimes trying to eliminate it. In the hostile territory, ROZ, as she will be called, ends up learning to create relationships and understand the animals that live there, even becoming the maternal figure of an orphan goose who will learn from her and a fox called Astuto how to live.

The adaptation of the book by the same name Peter Brown received 3 nominations for the 2025 Oscar and is available on the Prime Video streaming platform, Apple TV, Google Play and also on YouTube.


3. Inside Out 2

Being the sequel to the 2016 film, “Inside Out 2” follows Riley through one of the most important stages of life, adolescence. After lighting the candles on her birthday cake to celebrate her 13th birthday, as she now deals with the onset of puberty, the revelation that her two best friends are changing schools, the desire to join the team hockey and making new friends — and, of course, the arrival of new and more complex emotions (Anxiety, Envy and Shame) that will mess up your brain’s control room.

With direction from Kelsey Mann, “Inside Out 2” received an Oscar nomination for “Best Animated Feature” and can be found in the Disney+ streaming catalog.


4. Wicked

Starring Cinthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda), the film adaptation of the well-known musical follows the characters who would later become remembered, respectively, as the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West, presented in the classic “The Wizard of Oz”.

In the plot, they come together when they enter Shiz University, forming an unexpected friendship that, unfortunately, has an expiration date. This is because, after visiting the ruler of Oz in search of help to solve a growing problem where they live, the differences between them will come to the surface like never before, and these will forever transform the relationship they have and how they are known in Oz.

Directed by Jon M. Chuthe adaptation of the famous literary work written by L. Frank Baum in 1900, received 10 nominations at the 2025 Oscars and is available to rent on the Prime Video streaming platform.


5. Conclave

The plot of “Conclave” follows Lawrence, a Cardinal who is assigned to lead one of the most secret and ancient events in the world: the choice of a new Pope, after the death of the current pontiff. So the most influential world leaders of the Catholic Church gather at the Vatican to participate in the selection. Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy, uncovering secrets that threaten not only his faith, but also the foundations of the Church.

Starring Ralph Fiennesknown for playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter saga, and directed by Edward Berger“Conclave” received eight nominations at this year’s awards. The film opens this Thursday, January 23, in Brazilian cinemas.

The 2025 Oscars will take place on March 2nd, Carnival Sunday, at the Dolby Theater, in Hollywood, United States, at 9pm (Brasília time). The awards ceremony will be broadcast on the TNT channel and the Max streaming platform.
