‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ has also won a series; see the details of the production that aired about a decade and a half before the Disney films
It is probably the most remembered adaptation of the books written by CS Lewis be the live-action feature films released by Disney: “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005), “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ( 2010).
In the films, Lúcia (Georgie Henley), Edmundo (Skandar Keynes), Susan (Anna Popplewell) and Pedro (William Moseley), end up discovering Narnia after accidentally finding a portal in a wardrobe. As they cross, the quartet ends up coming across a fantastic world in which there are talking animals and mythological creatures, and they team up with the Lion Aslan to help in the battles to save Narnia from the evil that tries to dominate it.
But, did you know that “The Chronicles of Narnia” also featured a live-action series about a decade and a half before the story could be seen on the big screen?
The ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ series that almost no one knows about
The British production was launched by the BBC and had three seasons to adapt four of the seven books that hit the shelves between 1950 and 1956. They are: “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” and “The Silver Chair”.
As reported by the IGN portal, in the episodes that aired between the 1980s and 1990s, there are some differences in comparison to the trio of films that arrived later. This is because, while the cinematographic work features Aslan as a CGI character, in the series he was played by a huge doll, in addition to standing out for bringing a tone more similar to what is portrayed in the books.
Each season had an average of 4-5 episodes whose length varied between 25-30 minutes. Although it did not expand its reach much beyond the country in which it was released, the series pleased the public and critics when it was released, as it was nominated for an Emmy in the “Best Children’s Program” category.
Today the production cannot be found on streaming platforms in Brazil, but there are fan channels on YouTube that make the content available for free.
In addition to the feature films from Casa do Mickey and the project that took shape at the BBC, “The Chronicles of Narnia” will gain another version. It turns out that in 2018, Netflix acquired the rights to the works and from 2023 onwards began to reveal the news about the adaptation that it will produce.
According to the streaming giant’s plans, the project will be led by the director of “Barbie”, Greta Gerwig, who promises to bring a previously unseen vision of the story. In the cast, Louis Partridgeactor who gave life to the character Lord Tewksbury in the “Enola Holmes” franchise, was the only name confirmed.
The Netflix version should debut first in cinemas on November 26th, and then in the platform’s catalogue, where subscribers will be able to watch the content from December 25th.
