‘Sonic 3: The Movie’ breaks box office records and becomes the franchise’s biggest success, while the fourth feature film is in development
Exceeding expectations, ‘Sonic 3: The Movie’, released on December 25th, achieved a new box office milestone by surpassing the numbers of previous films, thus becoming the most profitable in the franchise to date. With a global gross of US$422 million, the film surpassed “Sonic 2: The Movie” (2022), which made US$405 million, and “Sonic: The Movie” (2020), with US$319 million. In the United States, production raised US$218 million, while on the international market it totaled US$203 million.
In the third film, Sonic joins Knuckles and Tails to face the villain Shadow, who emerges as a threat with abilities that defy everything the trio has ever faced. The plot continues to explore the hedgehog’s universe, including the protection of the Master Emerald and new threats, such as the GUN military force, which is searching for Dr. Eggman, played by Jim Carrey. The main cast also features Ben Schwartz like Sonic, Idris Elba like Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey like Tails.
The public response has been positive, with the film achieving an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade on CinemaScore, which reflects the impact that the franchise still has on its audience. The success of “Sonic 3” also guarantees a promising future for the character, with the fourth film already in development, scheduled for 2027, a possible sequel further exploring the villain Shadow and the introduction of other characters from the iconic game.
With global revenue surpassing the US$1.1 billion mark, the franchise remains one of the biggest recent successes in game-to-film adaptations. The film is now available for digital purchase and rental in the United States and should arrive in Brazil soon, with confirmation of the plot’s presence in the Prime Video catalog in January.
