5 Disney animations that were box office failures

Despite being a hit factory, Disney has already had some animations that caused significant losses for the studio. Find out!

Over its more than 100 years, Disney has released animations that have impacted the lives of millions of people around the world, being extremely acclaimed by international critics.

It is no surprise that, among the 10 highest-grossing animated films in history, seven are Disney productions, as reported by Deadline. They are: “Inside Out 2”, “Frozen 2”, “Frozen”, “The Incredibles 2”, “Toy Story 4”, “Toy Story 3” and “Finding Dory”.

However, despite having a huge list of successes, the studios created by Walt Disney in 1923 they also had some animations that, unfortunately, became box office failures. Check out which are considered the five worst!

5. Scrooge’s Ghost (2009)

With a budget of 200 million dollars, “Scrooge’s Ghost”, the animation that adapts the classic tale “A Christmas Carol”, did not generate much profit for Disney, grossing just US$ 325.3 million. The reason for its low box office, however, remains unclear. According to the ScreenRant portal, one of the reasons could be that the story had already been adapted by Disney twice, starring the Muppets and Mickey. Thus, the third adaptation would not have caught the public’s attention.

4. Red: Growing Up Is a Beast (2022)

Animation that tells the story of young Mei, who turns into a big red panda when she is embarrassed, had a budget of US$175 million, but grossed just US$21.8 million internationally (via Yahoo!). The fundraising failure occurred because, initially, “Red: Crescer é uma Fera” was only released on streaming — a practice that, naturally, does not provide much return.

3. Strange World (2022)

According to information from Deadline, “Mundo Estranho” had a budget of 100 to 200 million dollars, but sold only US$73.6 million in tickets. In addition to the fact that its plot, in general, did not attract much public attention, the main reason for the lack of demand was that its debut coincided with another highly anticipated release: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.

2. The Family of the Future (2007)

Released in 2007, “The Family of the Future” follows the journey into the future of young Lewis, and had a budget of US$150 million to produce. Serving as Disney’s test of 3D technology, the film grossed just US$170 million in theaters. According to ScreenRant, the public would not have accepted the animation very well, as, for many, 3D productions were still a Pixar specialty.

1. Treasure Planet (2002)

Adaptation of the book “Treasure Island”, by Robert Louis Stevensonthe animation “Treasure Planet” would have cost Disney US$ 140 million, however, it reportedly only raised US$ 110 million — with the loss value being even greater, according to Yahoo!. Due to its high production cost, the film ended up having problems with publicity and, in addition, it was also released at the same time as “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, directly damaging its box office.
