Why was Coldplay’s Chris Martin ‘scared’ about collaborating with BTS?

In a film, Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, revealed that he was “scared” before signing a collaboration with BTS. Understand!

In 2021, the British band Coldplay released their first collaboration with BTS through the track “My Universe”, a song from the album “Music of the Spheres”. The track, which soon became a hit, also won a documentary showing behind the scenes of the recording, containing cute moments of interaction between the members of the two groups.

In the same year, Coldplay also worked alongside Jin for the production of his solo debut song “The Astronaut”. In 2022, a few days before the BTS member enlisted in the army, the artists even took to the stage together during the band’s show in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to perform the song.

The entire moment was recorded in the concert film “Coldplay – Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate” (2023), where, while introducing Jin to the public, the vocalist Chris Martin reflects on his current friendship with idols, being honest when saying that, initially, he was afraid to collaborate with BTS.

The singer begins by reflecting that, for a few years, he felt that Coldplay needed to “play a certain type of music all the time,” and make the band fit into a box — a feeling that also resonates with his personal life.

Chris he vents by saying: “I met some good people and I read some good books and I met some great teachers and they seemed happy, and the thing that made them was not to be afraid of what you don’t know and people you don’t understand yet. You just ask.”

Martin He then says that, while facing these questions, he ended up receiving the suggestion to collaborate with BTS, something he considered a blessing in his life. However, the singer was also honest in saying that, initially, he was uncertain and full of judgments.

According to him, “a way that has truly blessed my life [pessoal] and our life as a band is that about 2 years ago, someone suggested to us that we should work with a Korean boyband. At first, I was full of judgment, which is usually my first reaction because I’m human.”

“And after a while, I was like, ‘Why do I feel scared about this? Just because they’re different, you know, they make different music?’ And so we went down that path and made a song together called ‘My Universe’, and it ended up being one of the most fun and fulfilling relationships we’ve had as a band and taught us a lot about ‘Just embrace each other instead of being afraid of them’.” concluded Chris Martin.

During the documentary that goes behind the scenes of the recording of “My Universe”, Chris He also doesn’t spare praise for BTS. In the production, he says that “It is very special to me that the most popular artist in the world speaks Korean and is a group of brothers who are not from the West. It feels very hopeful to me, in terms of thinking of the world as a family. When you see who they are as people and their music, it’s a message of unity and finding yourself. All things I agree with.”

BTS, who have always been open fans of Coldplay, also praised Martinwith Jimin saying that “He is beyond just a legendary singer, he impacts others for the better with his positive mindset. He is so admirable.”
