Who were the last Best Animated Feature winners at the Golden Globes?

Remember the last five winning animations of the prestigious Golden Globe, in addition to the current winner “Flow”!

The 82nd edition of the Golden Globes, held last Sunday, the 5th, maintained its tradition of rewarding the best in cinema and television, consolidating itself as one of the most anticipated events in the industry and a true thermometer for the Oscars. Among the categories that always attract great attention is “Best Animation”, recognizing productions that enchant with their creativity, technical innovation and captivating narratives.

This year, the competition was fierce, with animations of different styles and origins competing for the statuette. In addition to major franchises and box office hits, such as “Moana 2” and “Inside Out 2”, the category also made room for smaller-scale works, but with notable artistic impact, highlighting the plurality that characterizes the genre, such as “Flow” , which became a big winner.

In recent years, the animation genre has shown an evolution not only in terms of technical quality, but also in cultural, thematic and approach diversity. Remember the last five winners of the category and how each one marked their place in the history of the award:

1. Soul (2020) — 78th edition

A Pixar Animation Studios production, “Soul” follows Joe Gardner, a music teacher passionate about jazz who, after an unexpected accident, finds himself in a spiritual dimension known as “The Great Before.” There, he meets 22, a soul who never wanted to live on Earth. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, reflecting on purpose, passion, and what it truly means to live.

Bringing a bold and philosophical approach, the work combines the musical exuberance of jazz with existential questions about the meaning of life. The direction was in charge of Pete Docterknown for hits like “Up” and “Dijante Mente”, and Kemp Powerswhich brought an authentic perspective to the film’s cultural and emotional representation. Jamie Foxx gives voice to the protagonist Joe Gardner, while the soundtrack, written by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batistacombines jazz and electronic music, elevating the narrative and being widely acclaimed.

In addition to the Golden Globe, animation also won the Oscar for “Best Animation” and “Best Soundtrack”, the BAFTA in the same category and numerous awards from critics associations around the world.


2. Encanto (2021) — 79th edition

Set in vibrant Colombia, “Encanto” tells the story of the Madrigal family, whose members have unique magical gifts — except Mirabel, the only one without special powers. When the magic that sustains the family begins to weaken, it is up to Mirabel to unravel the mystery and save the “enchantment”. With songs by Lin-Manuel Mirandathe film celebrates diversity, culture and the power of family bonds.

Winner of the Oscar for “Best Animated Feature” and the Grammy for “Best Soundtrack for a Comedy or Musical”, the animation also received the Annie Award for “Best Animated Feature” and was a global success, with the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” dominating the music charts.


3. Pinocchio (2022) — 80th edition

In this dark and emotional adaptation of the classic tale of Carlo Collodi, Guillermo del Toro reimagines the story of the wooden doll who dreams of being a real boy. Set in fascist Italy in the 1930s, the animation explores themes of love, loss and humanity with a unique artisanal aesthetic, being widely praised by critics as a masterpiece of the genre.

Winner of the Oscar for “Best Animated Feature” and nominated for several other awards, the film won the Annie Award for “Best Direction” and was considered a milestone in stop-motion animation.


4. The Boy and the Crane (2023) — 81st edition

In yet another masterpiece by Hayao Miyazaki“The Boy and the Crane” follows Mahito, a boy who moves to the countryside after his mother’s death. There, he discovers a magical and mysterious world guided by an enigmatic heron. With profound metaphors about life, death and acceptance, the film combines visual poetry and emotional storytelling.

Recognized at the Venice Film Festival and winner of the Annie Award for “Best Screenplay”, the film reaffirmed the director’s status as one of the biggest names in animation, together with Studios Ghibli.


5. Flow (2024) — 82nd edition

The newest Golden Globe winner, “Flow”, is a non-speaking animation that portrays a lonely cat in a devastated world, seeking refuge on a boat inhabited by animals of different species. The film addresses cooperation, survival and the dynamics between species in an apocalyptic scenario, using a minimalist and symbolic visual narrative that captivated critics.

In addition to the Golden Globe, the film was acclaimed at the Annecy Animation Festival, receiving the award for “Best Film”, and was nominated for the Oscar for “Best Animation”, in addition to being present on the Oscar shortlist and becoming a milestone for Latvia, positioning the country as an emerging force in global animation.
