History, personality, inspirations and more; discover how the first film in the new DCU, ‘Superman’, will portray Krypto, the dog adopted by Clark Kent
With the release of the first teaser trailer for “Superman” it was possible to see the first scenes of Krypto, the extraterrestrial dog adopted by Clark Kent who, like his owner, comes from the planet Krypton and has powers such as the ability to fly and super strength.
In the preview, Krypto is seen wearing his iconic red cape when called by Superman, who finds himself lying on the ice very injured and asks for his pet’s help to return home.
Although it is not possible to know the general context of Krypto’s role in the feature film, several statements reveal more about the personality and history of the dog in the title.
1. What is Krypto’s origin story?
Krypto appeared in the 210th edition of “Aventure Comics”, published in 1955, under the creation of Otto Binder and Curt Swan. In the comics it is explained that Krypto was sent into space on a test ship, but due to an unscheduled detour, he ended up landing on Earth, where his destiny crossed with that of Superman, who adopted him as a teenager.
2. Is Krypto inspired by a real-life dog?
Yes! When the character was confirmed in the film, on October 15, through a publication made by the project’s director and co-president of DC Studios, james gunnon Instagram, the filmmaker confirmed in the caption that the furry friend was chosen based on his pet, Ozu.
“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing ‘Superman.’ Ozu came from a backyard hoarding situation with 60 other dogs and had never met humans. It was, to say the least, problematic. He immediately came in and destroyed our house, our shoes, our furniture (…) I remember thinking, ‘Wow, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ And so, Krypto came into the script and changed the shape of the story, while Ozu was changing my life.”
3. What race is Krypto in ‘Superman’?
Like Ozu, Krypto belongs to the classification of dogs popularly nicknamed “mango seed”, that is, he will be a mixed breed dog whose most striking characteristic is his messy and ruffled hair, as reported by the Tecmundo portal.
4. Will Krypto speak on ‘Superman’?
No! Krypto will not be a talking dog. Although in the comics and animations he has this ability, in the film this characteristic will not be applied.
The person who reported it was Gunn himself while responding to a fan on the BlueSky social network. “He is a dog. He doesn’t talk, unless you include barking,” he said.
5. What will Krypto’s personality be like in ‘Superman’?
If you are expecting a cute and calm dog, it is better to align your expectations, as Gunn stated that one of these attributes will not be part of Krypto’s temperament! In an interview with the Jovem Nerd portal, the filmmaker stated that the pet will be “terrible”.
“I think what you’ll see is that Krypto looks like a better dog in the trailer than he does in the movie. It’s a very terrible dog. You will love him because he is a dog, so how can you not [amá-lo]? He has these cute, innocent eyes, but he’s a terrible dog,” Gunn said.
It’s worth remembering that “Superman” will bring David Corenswet (Twisters) as the owner of Krypto. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 10, 2025, marking the first feature-length film in the new media project for DC Comics characters, called DC Universe (DCU).
