Films about Ukraine were shortlisted in the Documentary Feature Film and Documentary Short Film categories.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar) has announced shortlists in 10 categories. They include two documentaries – Porcelain War And Once upon a time in Ukraineshot in co-production in Ukraine. It was announced on Tuesday, December 17, on the website of the film academy.
Movie Porcelain War tells of three artists from Kharkov who remain in the front-line city, despite the threat of siege and capture by Russian troops. Despite the danger, they fill the city with art: they make porcelain figurines that decorate the houses destroyed by the Russian shelling.
The film premiered at the Sundance International Independent Film Festival in January 2024, where it won the Grand Prize in the Documentary Competition. The film has already won 37 awards and 27 nominations in international film festivals.
Short film Once upon a time in Ukraine (Once upon a Time in Ukraine), directed by Betsy West, about the lives of children during the war, was shortlisted in the Best Documentary Short Film category. The film was created as a co-production between Ukraine and the USA.
It was previously reported that three Ukrainian films were long-listed for the 2025 Oscars.
