Lor Kalami. “When a woman is aware of herself, we can also think that her child will flourish more”

INTERVIEW – On all fronts, theater and cinema, the actress impresses her directors, the actors she plays with and the public My inseparableAnne-Sophie Bailey’s sensitive film about the mother-son relationship.

That she plays the cleaner in the corner (Full time), fabulous (A devoted friend) or a lover surrounded by a stubborn donkey (Antoinette at Cevennes), Lor Kalami embraces the contours of the characters like no other. All in sensitivity and energy and without fear of rigor when it imposes itself.

As evidence: My inseparableAnne-Sophie Baile’s first film, where she plays the mother of a disabled young man. Not only did the boy fall in love, but his fiancée, also “late”, is pregnant. Through their story, the filmmaker indirectly addresses the overheating and guilt of caregivers, but also parenthood and the liberation of the disabled.

Madame Figaro. – For what? My inseparable has it become obvious?
Laura Kalami. – For this relationship of mother and son, who has to reinvent himself and which, despite the situation of disability, is completely universal. Jean-Pierre Bakry once said: “Family is good, but so is the sun. However, if you stay there too long, it’s not good for the skin.” There is resentment between them, a situation that becomes unbearable and explodes when the mother learns that her son is expecting a child with a woman she did not know existed problems and feelings: secrecy, addiction, fear of falling in love, anxiety that offspring will leave the nest…

Is it ultimately a story of double emancipation?
Totally, and it’s the son who takes the lead.He loves his mother deeply (and vice versa), but he needs air when he falls in love. This shock within him drives him back to the questions he had hidden; What is she left without this son? Can she still live the love story…

Society makes mothers feel guilty. This is also what the movie is about…
Cinema has long shown perfect and self-sacrificing mothers or stepmothers, therefore caricatured and guilt-inducing. The performances are thankfully evolving and becoming less complex. Some may judge my character for some of the things she says or because she thinks about herself first, but is she a bad mother for that? it will blossom that their relationship will be healthier.

I follow my instincts and my desires elsewhere

How did you work with your partner Charles Peccia-Galetto?
Just as his character is not defined by his disability, I did not see Charles as different from my other colleagues. He had never worked in the cinema, sometimes it was necessary to arrange his days so as not to tire him too much, but he put himself at Anna-Sophie’s service with all his sensitivity and great energy.

Anne-Sophie Bailey says “Lauren has an intense emotional power, she can throw herself into a crisis like Jenna Rowlands in Cassavetes”…
The best compliment. She dares everything, abandons herself without reserve, and her beauty is only a mask, which she is not afraid to disfigure. Her creativity, unique personality, sense of tragedy and fantasy were the explosive material of the fiction she created with Cassavetes Gloria. That was one of Ann-Sophie’s references to my character, who can be rude to her son, which isn’t always welcome, but who is one in life?

You are in great demand by the cinema. How do you choose the roles?
I follow my instincts and my desires elsewhere. The meeting with the director is also essential. The way Anne-Sophie spoke to me My inseparable moved me. I felt we could go far together. He’s worked with the same team since his short films, and the energy on the set was more sociable. I think of cinematographer Nader Chalhoub, whose hyper-elegant character sets him free. from the naturalistic aesthetic we often find for this type of story.

I am very grateful to Franck Dubosk for allowing me to live an old dream of playing with Benoit Poelvorde.

1:eh January, you will be Bear in Jurassic By Frank Dubosk What can you say about it?
Frank will surprise with this film, the script of which I really liked. Black, detective comedy in the spirit of the Coens. The absurd rubs shoulders with blood. Although his audience is his favorite, Frank has the courage to explore other avenues.

Your return to school will be busy You will be at the Montparnasse Theater from January 23 Men’s skin…
It’s an adaptation of Hubert and Zanzim’s comic book, part musical show with songs by Ben Mazuet and directed by my friend Lena Breban. “, a costume that allows him to become a man. She then discovers what men are entitled to, but also the fact that her husband-to-be is more attracted to her male partner than herself.

Many actors are afraid of singing and consider the exercise immodest. and you
My modesty is elsewhere. I already sang Iris and men and inside the theater models, where I made the reworked version lovely, By Barbara. I love it and even hope that one day I can play a rock singer in a movie.
