Actor James Caanmade movie history by playing Sonny Corleone in the saga “Godfather“(The Godfather) died Wednesday night at the age of 82, his family announced Thursday via his Twitter profile.
“The family appreciates the love and condolences and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time,” the statement said.
For the role in the first part “Godfather”, Caan received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. There are other titles in his filmography, such as “rain people(also directed by Francis Ford Coppola) “Brian’s Song”, “Rollerball” and “A Bridge Too Far”.
HER PASSION FOR ACTION
James Caan was born in 1940 in the Bronx, New York to a Jewish family. He played football, went to Hofstra University and discovered his passion for acting there. At Hofstra he met Francis Ford Coppola, who would go on to direct The Godfather and one of the most prominent figures in New Hollywood in the 1970s.
His acting debut was in the student theater and on Broadway, where he played his first role in 1961. He then tried his hand at film and television, landing his first starring role in 1965 in Howard Hawks’ Red 7000 Danger.
