Discover who are the actors cast to bring Moana, Maui, Chef Tui, Sina and Grandma Tala to life in the first live-action “Moana”
Moana fans have nothing to complain about! This is because, after eight years without new stories featuring the Polynesian princess, the wait was rewarded, as, in addition to the first sequel to the plot released in 2016 by Walt Disney Animation — which hit theaters last Thursday, the 28th —, there is also another project in progress: a live-action one!
The title, which will take shape through real actors and scenarios, was announced in April 2023, and should go on sale on July 10, 2026 adapting the story of “Moana – Um Mar de Aventuras”, in which Moana joins to Maui on a mission to return Te Fiti’s heart and save the island where the Motonui community lives. To fuel curiosity, some information has already been revealed about the adaptation of Moana’s adventure across the ocean, including who are the actors who will be responsible for bringing Moana and her family to life, in addition to the tattooed demi-god Maui.

Catherine Laga’aia — Moana
On June 12 of this year, Disney Studios revealed through a social media post that Catherine Laga’aia would be responsible for bringing Moana to life. The actress has a prominent role as the young version of the character Candy (Frankie Adams) in “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart”, and will make her debut in theaters by playing the sailing princess.
“I’m very excited to embrace this character, because Moana is one of my favorites,” Laga’aia said in a statement to the press. “My grandfather comes from Fa’aala, Palauli, in Savai’i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I am honored to have the opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent girls who look like me.”
Dwayne Johnson — Maui

Maui’s official voice actor in animation, Dwayne Johnson it will be the flesh and blood version of the demigod. The actor is in titles such as “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017), “Adão Negro” (2022) and “Operação Natal”, a film currently showing in Brazilian cinemas.
John Tui — Chief Tui, father of Moana

New Zealand actor who was in the cast of “Power Rangers: SPD” (2005), “Power Rangers: Mystic Force” (2006), “Battleship” (2012), “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” (2014) and “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (2018), John Tuiwas cast to play Chief Tui, Moana’s father.
Frankie Adams — Sina, mother of the princess

Moana’s mother, Sina, will be played by Frankie AdamsSamoan-New Zealand actress who played Bobbie Draper in the television series “The Expanse” (2015 — 2022). Rena Owen — Grandma Tala
