What does the ogre’s name mean?

Find out how Shrek came about and what the meaning is, the name of the ogre that stars in the animation of the same name released by DreamWorks in 2001

Used to identify something or someone, the name is one of the first pieces of information we ask when we are meeting a person. So much so that, in “Shrek” (2001), when the paths of Donkey and Shrek are intertwined, the chatty animal soon questions the protagonist about his name, which he reveals to be the same name that gives the plot its title.

What does Shrek mean?

According to Superinteressante magazine, the word “Shrek” is derived from the German “Schreck”, which means “fear” or “scare”. Therefore, it is possible that the name was chosen to represent the feelings and actions that the ogre causes when seen by other creatures due to its appearance.

The Legion of Heroes portal also states that the name of the one who saw his peace in the swamp taken away when he saw the place being invaded by creatures from fairy tales, also has roots in the Jewish language Yiddish, where “shreklekh” means horrible or terrible.

It’s worth mentioning that in 2018, user @hamptont2010 on Reddit shared a theory that suggested that Shrek invented the name when he was questioned by Donkey. This is because it takes him a while to respond, which could mean that they were thinking about how to define the way they would be identified by the person who would become their best friend.

According to the websiteADORCinema, the idea could be real for two reasons: Shrek lived alone, so he didn’t need to use a name, in addition, due to the meaning of the ogre’s name, he may have chosen “Shrek” because it was something he always He listened when someone saw him, so he would have come to believe that that could be his real name.

Still, there is another possibility: Shrek may have thought of the answer, because “it had simply been so long since anyone asked him that he had forgotten”, as the internet user himself states on the social network. None of the ideas were commented on by DreamWorks, the animation studio responsible for production.
