Considered by many fans as a great interpreter of Glinda, the director of Wicked believed that Ariana Grande wanted another role
Last week, the long-awaited premiere of the film “Wicked” took place, an adaptation of the renowned Broadway musical of the same name, inspired by the 1995 book of the same name written by Gregory Maguirewhich is based on the literary work “The Wizard of Oz”, released in 1900 by L. Frank Baumand popularized in the 1930s with the film adaptation starring Judy Garland.
The most recent release stars Ariana Grandeand Cynthia Erivoresponsible for playing Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively. However, in a recent interview, the production director, Jon M. Churevealed that, initially, Big I would have played the role of another character: Elphaba.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Chu commented that, during the audition process for Arianaalways felt that she would be trying out for the role of Glinda, however, he ended up being surprised when he realized that the singer had prepared all of Elphaba’s songs for the audition.
“We were getting mixed messages. I was like, ‘Of course she’s coming for Galinda.’ And then my casting director was like, ‘No, I think she thinks she’s coming for Elphaba.’ I was like, ‘That wasn’t the plan.’ And they were like, ‘Well, she prepared this.’” the filmmaker said.
Jon continued his speech by saying: “She was being nice to me, and I was being nice to her. We just let her do it. But in my mind, I was like, ‘Why is she singing Elphaba now?’ Maybe because she’s sung these in the past, but to me, she’s always been a Glinda. We didn’t know each other well enough to say, ‘Alright, let’s clear up the telephone game here. We’re here for Glinda. Right?’”.
In an interview with the Sentimental Men podcast, Ariana Grande clarified the situation, stating that, in her heart, she was sure it would be Glinda, but she was prepared for both roles.
“I always had a realization in my heart that it would be Glinda. I went straight to singing and acting classes every day. I wanted my muscles and my ropes to know what they were doing, and to be prepared for anything. Like, I had a feeling they were going to make me sing both roles, even though they weren’t really considering me for both roles. I had a feeling they were going to make me sing for both of them, and they did. At my first audition, they had me sing ‘No One Mourns the Wicked’, ‘Popular’, The Wizard and I’ and ‘Defying Gravity’. But I arrived [no teste] and I had, like, my little pink bottle, and my pink things, it was pretty obvious what I was campaigning for,” he said.
