The film adaptation of the legendary Broadway musical Wicked, which was released on US screens on November 22, has opened with spectacular success, reports Reuters.
In its first weekend, the film earned $114 million domestically and $50.2 million worldwide, for a total of $164.2 million.
The result made the film the highest-grossing debut for a film based on a Broadway musical since Universal’s Les Misérables, which earned $103 million in its opening weekend in 2012.
In the US domestic market, Wicked is the third highest-grossing film at the box office this year, behind only the blockbusters Deadpool and Wolverine and the animated film Inside Out 2.
The rest of the films are also holding up at the box office. So, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II reached $221 million at the global box office in its second week at the box office. However, the film still did not make back its high budget of $250 million.
