Discover other actresses who also tried out for the cast of the film adaptation of ‘Wicked’, but didn’t pass the tests
Last Thursday, the 21st, the long-awaited film adaptation of “Wicked”, a renowned Broadway musical, arrived in Brazilian cinemas. In the new release, directed by Jon M. Chuthe iconic protagonists come to life through Ariana Grandewho plays Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and Cynthia Erivowho plays Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
However, before the version that we can see in theaters took shape, the film could have been very different. This is because, after production was confirmed, it was announced in 2016 that the filmmaker responsible for the work would be Stephen Daldrydirector and producer of the Netflix hit “The Crown.”
At that time, Stephen would have shown interest in another big name in the industry to play Elphaba: the actress and singer Lady Gagaas sources told Page Six (via Marie Claire Magazine). Furthermore, the vehicle also points out that Fiyero, a character played in the final version by Jonathan Baileywould also gain another interpreter in the version of Daldry: Shawn Mendes.
In addition to Gagaother great actresses also tried out for a chance to play Elphaba and Glinda, but they didn’t pass the tests, meaning the roles went to Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Granderespectively.
With that in mind, RECREIO put together a list of 4 actresses who almost participated in the “Wicked” film, but maybe you didn’t know. Check it out!
1. Amanda Seyfried
Star of “Mamma Mia!” and “Mean Girls”, Amanda Seyfried revealed during an interview with Backstage in July 2022 that, while she was working on the series “The Dropout”, available on Disney+, she spent her weekends auditioning in person to play Glinda in the film, and that it was a role she really wanted.
“Last summer, while I was playing Elizabeth (Holmes in The Dropout), on the weekends I was auditioning in person to play Glinda in the film version of Wicked — because I really wanted to,” the actress said in the interview. “I literally doubled over while playing the most difficult role of my life. I think it also taught me how far I’ve come as a singer, what I really wanted to prove.”
2. Dove Cameron
In an interview with The Wrap, the voice of “Boyfriend” and performer of Mal in Disney’s “Descendants” franchise, Dove Cameron revealed that she also auditioned to participate in “Wicked, and that “It was one of the longest processes I’ve ever been a part of.” Despite not getting a role, the star expressed her support and admiration for her friend, Ariana Grandeand the entire cast.

“She (Ariana Grande) is a genuinely dear friend of mine. We met when we were super young. I think she’s going to rock it. I think the entire cast is phenomenal, from head to toe. So as a fan, I’m very, very excited to see it,” she said.
3. Reneé Rapp
Protagonist of the film “Mean Girls — The Musical” and voice of “Snow Angel”, the actress and singer Renee Rapp also tried out for the role of Glinda, as revealed by the artist during an interview with Watch What Happens Live in November 2022.

“Ariana is going to be… can I swear? She’s going to be f***ing amazing. I’m so excited,” Reneé commented.
4. Taylor Louderman
Playing Regina George in the Broadway musical “Mean Girls — The Musical”, the actress Taylor Louderman confirmed via Instagram that she had auditioned to play Glinda, however, unlike the other actresses mentioned on the list, she wasn’t very happy about not being cast in the role.

“yyyy did I audition or did I think I had a chance?! This thing… you can’t care too much about any role you’re auditioning for (or you might get hurt and not come back), but you have to care enough to give it your all. I cared too much this time,” Taylor wrote in the post.
