On November 21, the premiere of the western Rust, created with the participation of Alec Baldwin, took place at the EnergaCAMERIMAGE film festival in Poland.
The event is dedicated to Ukrainian cameraman Galina Hutchins, who tragically died while filming in 2021. The film’s closing credits begin with the words “For Galina” and a quote from the cameraman: “What can what can we do to improve it?” According to the film’s director Joel Souza, the woman often repeats these words while working.
“That’s what he kept saying. After that, it became very profound. And I can apply it to life, you know? And if people really apply it to life, the world will be a better place, honestly . And that’s not it.” what he said about it – he was talking about the frame. But that’s how his life really is. He was nice to people, treated people well, and wanted to be useful to them, and I think that quote is apt. legacy for him,” Souza said.
The film opens with a speech from director and cameraman Bianca Cline, who is finishing work on the film after Hutchins’ death. In the end credits, it is listed as “cinematography”, while “Director of Photography” is specifically dedicated to Galina, who was posthumously inducted into the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).
The film’s producer and star, Alec Baldwin, who shot Hutchins with a gun, was not invited to the festival because organizers feared he would detract from the international premiere.
“The sole purpose of this show is to honor Galina’s work, talent and artistic achievements,” said festival director Marek Židowicz.
It was previously reported that a scene from the film Rust, rehearsals for which led to the death of cameraman Galina Hutchins on set, was completely cut from the finished film.
