With Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the main roles, ‘Wicked’, an adaptation of the Broadway show, is now showing in Brazilian cinemas
THE LONG AWAITED MOMENT HAS ARRIVED! After much anxiety from fans, the film “Wicked”, which adapts the renowned Broadway musical, finally arrives in Brazilian cinemas this Thursday, 21st, featuring Ariana Grande in the role of Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
Directed by Jon M. Chuthe film takes place in the same universe as the famous “The Wizard of Oz”, a famous literary work written by L. Frank Baum in 1900, being a prelude to the story, as well as being inspired by the film adaptation of the same name released in 1939 which features Dorothy (Judy Garland), a girl who ends up in a magical land after her house is taken by a cyclone, needing the help of the enigmatic Wizard of Oz to return to Kansas.
In the plot presented in the books and in the 1930s adaptation, Glinda and Elphaba also appear, with the Good Witch of the North helping Dorothy on part of her journey, while the Wicked Witch of the West tries to do away with the girl, blaming her for the death of her sister, since, upon arriving in the magical world of Oz, her house fell on top of the other witch.
In “Wicked,” audiences will discover that Elphaba and Glinda have known each other for a long time, as they studied at Shiz University together when they were younger, and were even close friends for a time.
The story of the new film adaptation, which attracts a legion of fans around the world, also emerged as a book, released in 1995, becoming even more popular among the public after being adapted for the theater for the first time in 2003.
The musical show, which has been running on Broadway in New York for over 20 years, features original protagonists Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Glinda, and Indina Menzel like Elphaba. In addition to its two decades on stage, the play has also won three Tony Awards, the main theatrical award in the world, in addition to its soundtrack album also receiving a Grammy Award.
