A yellow and blue painting by Mark Rothko became the top lot at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong, where it sold for a bargain.
Picture Untitled (Yellow and Blue) American expressionist Mark Rothko sold for $32.5 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong.
It was the most expensive lot of the night, with total proceeds for works of art valued at $52.6 million, ArtNews reports.
Created in 1954, the painting, about 2.5 meters high, was once owned by famous collectors – the American banker Paul Mellon and the French businessman Francois Pinault. In 2015, it was sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $46.5 million. The work then belonged to financier Jho Low, who was later exposed as a fraud. Now the painting has been acquired by a new private collector.
Other significant auction lots included hat Kusama’s Yaoi, sold for $5.6 million, and Red, white and black George Condo (2014), which found a new owner for $2.6 million.
It was previously reported that a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Titian, once found at a bus stop in London, was sold at auction for a tidy sum.
