The novel describes a day in the life of six astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station.
The 2024 Booker Prize winner is Orbital, a novel by English writer Samantha Garvey. This was announced on Tuesday, November 12, during the live broadcast of the awards ceremony.
“Samantha Garvey wrote a novel inspired by the beauty of sixteen sunrises and sixteen sunsets. It talks about everyone and no one, while six astronauts on the International Space Station are flying over the Earth, observing the changing seasons, despite the fragility of borders and Through its lyrical language and Harvey’s intelligence, our world is surprising and new to us,” said the head of the jury, artist and writer Edmund de Waal.
It is understood that the name of the winner will be announced at a ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London. The novelist received £50,000 and a trophy, presented to him by last year’s winner Paul Lynch.
According to the plot of the book, six astronauts – from the USA, Russia, Italy, Great Britain and Japan – are on duty at the International Space Station. They carry out important work there, but gradually begin to wonder: what is life without Earth? What would Earth be without humanity?
Orbital is one of several space novels nominated for the Booker Prize in recent years, and the winning first novel set in space.
At just 136 pages, the book is one of the shortest Booker Prize winners.

Samantha Garvey worked at the Herschel Astronomy Museum in Bath in the 2000s. She currently teaches an MA course in creative writing and is the author of five novels.
He was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2009 for his debut novel The Wilderness, about an elderly architect suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
His writing has appeared in Granta Magazine, The Guardian, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Telegraph and TIME magazine.
Garvey is the only British writer shortlisted for the 2024 Man Booker Prize.
The Booker Prize has been awarded annually to authors in the UK since 1969. It is considered one of the most prestigious awards in this field.
Typically, more than 100 books are submitted for the prize. First, the jury compiles a long list of awards (about 20-25 titles), and then leaves only six.
The shortlist for the 2024 Booker Prize was announced earlier, including six books out of 156 applicants.
It was previously reported that The New York Times presented a ranking of the best books written and published in the 21st century.
