NewJeans members became honorary ambassadors of Seoul, South Korea, in a ceremony held in 2023
As reported by the Koreaboo portal, NewJeans achieved an impressive new feat: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein became the highest paid honorary ambassadors of the city of Seoul, South Korea. This is because, data obtained by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee of the Seoul Provincial Assembly, reveals that, by becoming honorary ambassadors of the city of Seoul, the quintet received ₩240 million KRW (about R$974 thousand) in fees.
It is worth remembering that the revenue paid in fees was ₩450 million KRW (around R$1.82 million), more than half of which was directed to NewJeans. This is the highest amount of fees ever received by someone occupying this role.
Value in fees?
Normally, public relations ambassadors do not receive remuneration for activities carried out for the South Korean government, with the exception of the city of Seoul, where these people are classified as non-governmental workers, and receive payments for “necessary expenses” under Article 6 of the Ordinance Government Public Relations Ambassador Operation.
As the amount paid to NewJeans is high and generated local criticism, the councilor Kim Hye Young revealed that the remuneration “should be viewed as compensation received by the group for its promotional activities,” as written by Koreaboo. NewJeans was selected for the role last year at a ceremony held on February 16.
Korean tourism ambassadors
In addition to being ambassadors for Seoul, NewJeans members are also honorary ambassadors for Korea Tourism 2024 by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO).
The quintet will work with the KTO to promote activities in the country and welcome visitors, whether for leisure or business. Before the group, the Indian actress Anushka Sen performed the same role, as she was chosen by the organization in 2023.
