The hidden Disney reference in ‘Dragon Ball’ that you didn’t notice

The plot portrays the life of Goku, a boy who has a monkey’s tail and, consequently, extraordinary strength, who has his life changed when he meets Bulma, an adventurer who is in search of the seven Dragon Balls.

Its success is so great that, according to information released by the portal DitoCinema, in 2024, “Dragon Ball” managed to surpass “One Piece”, and become Toei Animation’s most profitable franchise. In the company’s quarterly report for fiscal year 2025, it is possible to see that Goku’s saga comes in first place with a profit of 5.67 billion yen, while Luffy’s plot comes in second with 5.54 billion yen .

Despite its enormous popularity in all parts of the world, the franchise still carries some curious facts that many may not know. Newer fans, for example, may not be aware of the curious translation of some characters’ names, such as Gohan, which is rice, Kakarot, which is translated as carrot, or Trunks, which means swim trunks.

Furthermore, the story created by Akira Toriyama also has some easter eggs related to great pop culture icons, such as Bubbles, Lord Kaioh’s monkey, which was inspired by the King of Pop’s monkey, Michael Jackson, who had the same name, or the reference to one of the famous characters’ favorite characters. director and animator Walt Disney.

Reference to a princess?

The curious Easter egg appears in the animation “Dragon Ball Z”, where the public meets the main antagonists of the saga: the alien wizards Bibidi and Babidi, villains responsible for creating and awakening the pink demon, called Boo (Majin Boo).

It turns out that the names of the three characters were inspired by the princess Cinderella film, more specifically by the song “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo”, sung by the Fairy Godmother, when she undergoes the transformations so that Cinderella Cat can attend Prince Charming’s ball. Remember!
