Only three members? Remember what happened to BIGBANG

Remember what happened to BIGBANG, the iconic second generation boy group formed by YG Entertainment, after controversies

It has been five years since the name of BIGBANG, the iconic second generation boy group formed by YG Entertainment, became involved in the controversy related to the former member Seungri.

In 2019, the South Korean music industry was deeply shaken by accusations of sexual violence, economic crimes and participation in illegal games against the artist, which ended up resulting in his arrest and the reduction of the group to just four members, leaving only G-Dragon, Daesung, TOP and Taeyang.

However, in May 2023, TOP surprised everyone by suddenly announcing on his official Instagram account that he was no longer part of BIGBANG. This news took many fans by surprise, especially since the boy group had released a single the previous year, and had not signaled a further reduction in their lineup.

Since then, G-Dragon, Daesung and Taeyang remain active in the K-pop industry, whether through solo projects or advertising for brands. Furthermore, last September, the three reunited during the solo show of Taeyangwhere they went on stage together to perform the song “WE LIKE 2 PARTY”. G-Dragon and Taeyangwho form the unit GD X TAEYANG, also performed with the hit “GOOD BOY”.

The moment was even recorded on the artists’ social networks, suggesting that the group is still active, but with no releases scheduled for the future.

BIGBANG reunion at MAMA 2024

Last Tuesday, the 29th, the South Korean broadcaster CJ ENM held a press conference (via Soompi) to present the main news of the MAMA Awards 2024, in addition to revealing the collaborative presentations between great artists, indicating a possible reunion of the BIGBANG at the awards.

The chief producer of the event, Yoon Shin Hyefirst commented on the confirmation of G-Dragon as one of the performers, marking the star’s return to the awards show after nine years. However, he also mentioned a possible participation by the boy group, ensuring that the possibility is still under discussion:

We were thinking of ways to make this year’s stage distinctive, and the iconic G-Dragon, who is set to make his return this year, came to mind. G-Dragon himself holds the MAMA stage in high regard and expressed that he intends to give a memorable performance this year. We are confident he will create another iconic stage that will be remembered for the next 20 years. We can also feel his confidence in his ability to command the stage (…) BIGBANG’s appearance is still under discussion. We will provide an update once we have a final decision.”
