HYBE issues statement on document with malicious comments about K-Pop artists

After the revelation of the internal document with malicious comments related to numerous K-pop artists, HYBE commented on the controversy

In recent days, one of the main topics on social media has been HYBE’s internal document released during the audit by the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee on October 24, where the 18,000-page report contains a series of malicious comments about numerous artists in the K-pop industry, including from other companies.

In the document, it is possible to see criticism related to the appearance and skills of stars from agencies such as YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment, known as Big3, as well as comments related to unfounded rumors and plans for viral marketing tactics that would reduce competition, between others.

This Tuesday, 29th, the CEO of HYBE, Lee Jae Sangshared an official statement through the conglomerate’s website, where it apologizes for the entire controversy, and states that it has contacted each of the companies mentioned in the report to ask for forgiveness individually. Check the translation:

“As CEO of HYBE, I sincerely apologize regarding the HYBE monitoring document.

In relation to our monitoring document that was highlighted during the National Assembly Committee on Culture, Sports and Tourism audit on October 24, I deeply apologize to the artists, industry stakeholders and fans.

This document was created as part of a process to retrospectively gather various public reactions and opinions on industry trends and issues. Although it was intended to be shared only with a limited number of leaders to understand market and fan sentiments, the content was highly inappropriate. The document contained provocative and explicit expressions aimed at K-pop artists, included the author’s personal opinions and assessments, and was preserved in writing. As a company representative, I acknowledge all errors and take full responsibility. I am particularly sorry and distressed by the unfounded suspicions of reverse viral marketing that are not true, causing misunderstanding and harm to innocent artists and individuals.

I formally and respectfully apologize to the outside artists mentioned in the document who have suffered harm and suffering. We are also reaching out to each agency individually to offer our apologies directly. Furthermore, I am also sincerely extending an official apology to all HYBE Music Group artists who have been subjected to criticism due to the company.

I recognize the lack of awareness among the leadership who received the document and, as CEO, I immediately stopped the creation of such monitoring documents. I promise to establish guidelines and strengthen internal controls to prevent such problems from occurring again.

Once again, I apologize to artists, industry stakeholders, fans and everyone who loves and supports K-pop for the pain caused by this incident. As a representative of the company, I commit to thorough reflection and self-examination to rectify past mistakes and prioritize the rights of all K-pop artists and respect for fans. We will do our utmost to contribute to the healthy development of the K-pop industry.

Thanks.

HYBE CEO Lee Jae Sang.”
