Last Wednesday, the rapper Jessi wrote an apology letter following a recent controversy with one of his fans. At the end of September, it was reported by South Korean media that an underage teenager asked for a photo with the artist in the Gangnam neighborhood of Seoul, however, after she refused to take the photo, the teenager became a victim of abuse verbal and physical aggression by a person who was close to Jessi at the moment.
At the time, Jessi tried to stop the attack, but soon left the scene. After the incident, she stated that she did not know the person who committed the attack. In her letter, published on Instagram, the singer regrets not having accepted the photo, and apologizes to the victim and her family; read the translation below:

Firstly, I want to sincerely apologize to the victim and her family affected by this incident.
Although I caused this situation, my inappropriate behavior, attitude and lack of response have harmed many people, including the victim. I made them feel betrayed and angry.
I have regretted this tens of thousands of times. I wish I could go back in time. If I had taken a photo with the victim, done more to protect her, gone straight to the police, or made a proper apology, the victim wouldn’t have suffered so much. I take full responsibility for this.
I know I can’t be forgiven with just those words. However, I am committed to correcting my mistakes and helping the victim recover, even if it is late.
Once again I apologize, even if it is too late. I was wrong.

Many internet users considered the virtual attacks that Jessi received after the incident, as the singer was not the aggressor nor did she encourage the individual’s action. Posts in support of her are being widely shared, and the situation is being compared to that of Sugafrom BTS, who also faced verbal abuse on social media after falling off a scooter in front of his house while under the influence of alcohol.

Seunghan case
One of the biggest cases that also presents “disproportionate hate in the Korean entertainment industry, was the recent departure of Seunghan from RIIZE.
Initially, both the idol and SM Entertainment had announced via social media that he would finally return from his long hiatus of almost a year, which began in November 2023 and which took place after some pre-debut photos were leaked in the media, showing Seunghan inhaling a cigarette and with an alleged ex-girlfriend.
However, after both statements, some South Korean fans and internet users were outraged by SM’s stance of bringing Seunghan back to RIIZE, claiming that the idol did not deserve to return to the boy group even after the time spent away.
