Why was Jennie’s ‘Mantra’ banned on Korean TV?

BLACKPINK’s Jennie’s latest single cannot be broadcast on a South Korean television channel; find out why!

Released on October 10, the single “Mantra”, by Jenniefrom BLACKPINK, was banned from a South Korean TV channel! The lyrics of the track, which marked the idol’s first solo release under the label she founded, ODD ATELIER, and her partnership with Columbia Records, talk about a code of conduct that beautiful girls follow to continue inspiring confidence and power.

Including the very Jennie commented on the song’s significance at the Chanel spring 2025 show at Paris Fashion Week, where she revealed to Vogue that the release is “a fun, upbeat anthem that celebrates female power and inspires every woman to shine in her own way with confidence”, as reported by the NME portal.

But why did the first promotional single from Jennie Since “You & Me”, released in October 2023, cannot be played on a certain television channel in South Korea?

CONTENT NOT ALLOWED?

“Mantra” cannot be broadcast on KBS, the South Koreans’ national public broadcaster. As reported by the Koreaboo portal, the news began to resonate in the national media today, the 23rd, and states that the suspicion is that the reason for such a ban is the mention of a specific brand in the banner, since, in South Korea, there is a law prohibiting excessive advertising in the media.

It is possible that the brand mentioned is the Land Rover Defender, a 4×4 vehicle produced by Land Rover, as in the chorus it sings:

That’s the pretty girl mantra, that’s just for cause, I just landed in LA
Pretty girls don’t cause drama, unless we want them to, it will depend on the day
Pretty girls crowding one Defendshe knows I will defend, I will never abandon
That’s the mantra of pretty girls, she’s wonderful, she makes you cut both ways

With this, “Mantra” would essentially be blacklisted from KBS and its programs, causing Jennieif you want the song to be broadcast on the station, you have to send a censored version of the song without mentioning the brand.

OTHER CASES

It is worth remembering that Jennie You’ve seen this happen before, but with BLACKPINK. Next to Rosé, Lisa and Jisoothe idol released “Pink Venom”, from the album “Born Pink” (2022), which was also banned due to the name of a specific brand.

Other cases also involve “BOOMBAYAH”, one of BLACKPINK’s debut tracks, released eight years ago under the YG Entertainment label, which was also blacklisted by Korean broadcasters for containing lyrics considered inappropriate and for mentioning a brand of alcohol.
