Check out everything that is known about “Sunrise on the Reaping”, the new book in the Hunger Games saga that will follow another important character in the franchise
Since the announcement of the release of “Sunrise on the Reaping”, many Hunger Games fans have been excited about the possibility of reuniting with the saga’s iconic and beloved protagonists. However, just like “A Song of Birds and Snakes,” the new story will focus on another iconic character, one who played a crucial role in Katniss’ development throughout the main trilogy.
What is the story about?
In “Sunrise on the Reaping”, we move away from Katniss’ journey and follow Haymitch Abernathy, the Hunger Games protagonist’s mentor. Through Instagram, Scholastic, the publisher responsible for books Suzanne Collins in the United States, revealed that the story ‘will revisit Panem twenty-four years before the events of the trilogy, beginning on the morning of the harvest of the Second Quaternary Massacre.’
This fictional event occurs every 25 years in the saga, and selects twice as many tributes to compete in the arena. In previous books, it is mentioned that, in addition to winning this edition, Haymitch was the youngest tribute chosen to participate that year.
When will the book be released?
Also according to the Scholastic publication, the book will hit North American shelves on March 18, 2025. In Brazil, Rocco publishing, responsible for the previous Hunger Games books, confirmed it last June (via @ otiagovalente on X) that the story will also be published here, but without a defined release date.

Will there be adaptation?
To the delight of fans, yes! “Sunrise on the Reaping” will be adapted into a film by Liongaste, with the premiere scheduled for November 20, 2026. So far, only the release date has been confirmed, with other information being just rumors.
In a publication stating that filming would begin in January 2025, the franchise’s producer, Nina Jacobsondenied the information, clarifying that the book will be released ‘months before production actually begins.’

Will Katniss and Peeta show up?
As we already know, the story will take place in a time before Katniss and Peeta were born. Therefore, the only way for both to appear would be through time jumps or references, as happened in “The Song of Birds and Snakes”, where the name ‘Katniss’ was mentioned through the plant that gave rise to the character’s name.
