Understand the controversy surrounding Seunghan’s departure

Understand the controversy and revolt behind Seunghan’s departure from RIIZE, an issue that took over social media last weekend

During the last weekend, between October 11th and 13th, RIIZE fans were surprised by a flurry of news involving the member Seunghan.

Initially, both the idol and SM Entertainment had announced via social media that he would finally return from his long hiatus of almost a year, which began in November 2023 and which took place after some pre-debut photos were leaked in the media, showing Seunghan inhaling a cigarette and with an alleged ex-girlfriend.

The news caused great commotion on social media, especially because, since the departure of Seunghanthe international fandom was dissatisfied with the reasons that led the record company to make this decision. However, excitement among most BRIIZEs was growing, with Seunghan promising to commit to the future of the boy group in this new phase. Check out the official publication along with the translation:

However, after both statements, some South Korean fans and netizens were outraged by SM’s stance of bringing Seunghan back to RIIZE, claiming that the idol did not deserve to return to the boy group even after the time he spent away.

Shortly afterwards, shocking scenes were published on social media, showing several wreaths of flowers in front of the record company’s building, many of them with messages demanding the immediate and definitive departure of Seunghan from RIIZE.

Obviously, the impact generated by these actions was felt by the Seunghan who, two days after the announcement of the end of the hiatus, published a handwritten letter on Weverse communicating his departure from RIIZE. In it, the idol says that leaving the boy group is the ‘best decision’ as he ‘doesn’t want to cause any more confusion or pain to the fans, the members or the company.’

Furthermore, Seunghan was reportedly seen in front of the SM Entertainment building on the same day, observing the flower crowns and messages asking for his departure. In the video, you can see that he shows gestures of concern, as well as a body expression that reveals his disappointment.

On the other hand, after the official announcement of the shutdown of SeunghanRIIZE’s international fans mobilized with hashtags like #JUSTICE_FOR_SEUNGHAN and #SMSupportingBullying. They argue that there are no plausible reasons for their departure, except for behaviors they consider normal, stating that Seunghan I was just having new experiences, just like any pre-teen.

Some even compared the situation with cases of HyunA, Taeilfrom NCT, and Seungrifrom BIGBANG, who were actually involved in serious sexual crimes, but did not generate the same commotion as the case of Seunghan.

Why aren’t the ‘knetz’ (Korean netizens embroiled in controversy) devoting the same energy to HyunA and her marriage, or to Seungri, Taeil and others who actually are criminals and sex offenders? Why target Seunghan? Why did you send a bunch of funeral wreaths to a man who did nothing wrong and was just having fun like a normal teenager?

The reasons that led Seunghan leaving RIIZE also affected other groups’ fandoms, showing that the situation has reached alarming levels of seriousness. BRIIZEs highlight that the stance of SM and some fans may influence future cases, a reality to be considered, as many idols also have or have had diverse experiences outside their respective groups.
