What is ‘Delirium for Two’, a syndrome covered in the film?

Discover how “Delirium for Two” arises, and what are the symptoms and treatments for this syndrome covered in “Joker 2”

At the invitation of Dove, RECREIO followed this Thursday, 10th, “Joker 2: Delirium for Two”, a film that follows Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenixnow institutionalized in Arkham Asylum, the psychiatric hospital that serves as a prison for Gotham City’s criminals, while awaiting trial for the crimes he committed in the first film, from 2019, when assuming the persona of Joker.

In the sequence, in addition to the unfolding of the case in court, the public can follow Fleck falling in love with Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, character from Lady Gagaintroduced as a patient at Arkham asylum, where the two begin a romance full of hallucinations and lies while the protagonist awaits the final sentence for his infractions.

During this period together, the two experience several moments in which they share the same madness, making a connection with the title of the film, which in French is “Folie à deux” — a phrase that also gives its name to a real and rare syndrome where two or more individuals share the same delusions.

What is Delirium for Two?

Also called delusional disorder or shared psychotic syndrome, this syndrome occurs when the delusions of a person with a psychotic condition are passed on to one or more apparently healthy subjects, as explained by the CNN portal when sharing information from the Indian Journal of Psychiatry and Laura Quiñones Urquizacreator of criminal profiles, author of the book “Lo que cuenta la escena del crimen” (What the crime scene tells, in literal translation) and the podcast “Trazos criminales“.

Generally — but not exclusively — this occurs between members of the same family, since the primary psychotic needs to have a connection with those who come to share the same delusional belief in order to influence them, whether these individuals have secondary mental illnesses or not. Furthermore, it is common for them to live in an environment with little outside influence or in social isolation.

When the syndrome manifests itself, commonly motivated by some trauma, those involved begin to experience moments of disconnection with reality, such as believing that they are being persecuted by beings from other planets, for example, which can have serious consequences for mental health and, in certain cases, cases, physical, both of the primary psychotic and those influenced.

As a rule, when they part, the symptoms of delirium and hallucinations remain only with the psychotic in which the delusional symptoms originally arose. Still, treatment for both cases may include supportive therapies, such as psychotherapy, and the use of medication.

In the case of Joker and Harley Quinn, it is possible to follow the results of the “Folie à deux” during the plot, especially during the musical numbers that the duo stars in. The film is showing in cinemas and can now be added to the Prime Video rental list; remember the trailer:
