Therefore, Gaga becomes the second actress to bring Harley Quinn to life in theaters, following in the footsteps of Margot Robbiewho played Harley Quinn in the “Suicide Squad” franchise and in the feature film “Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn and Her Fantabulous Emancipation” (2020).
However, the casting of a new actress for the role ended up generating a doubt among fans: after all, is there any difference between the Harley Quinn played by Margotfor the new Harley Quinn Lady Gaga?
Difference between Harlequins
Even before the film’s release, both Gaga as Todd Phillipsthe director responsible for the production, have already stated in numerous interviews that, despite being a character inspired by the comics, the new Harley Quinn is different from what fans have already seen.
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Lady Gaga stated that “My version of Harley Quinn is mine, and it is very authentic to the film and the characters. I’ve never done anything like what I’m doing in this film.”
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Todd explained that, despite having some similarities between the two, as both are inspired by comic books, the version of Gaga a unique interpretation by the artist, in addition to the new Harley Quinn being more based on cases of people who become obsessed with criminals, and start to idolize them.
“While there are some things that people would find familiar about it, it’s really Gaga’s own interpretation, and Scott’s interpretation [Silver, o roteirista] and mine,” says Phillips. “She became the way [Charles] Manson had girls who idolized him. The way these [assassinos presos] They have people who admire them. There are things about Harley in the movie that were taken from the comics, but we took it and shaped it into what we wanted it to be.”
Todd Phillips he also highlights that he made an effort to make the new Harley Quinn different from the other interpretations. According to the filmmaker: “I did my best to, of course, be knowledgeable about all the various interesting pieces that would come up as I was developing this character. But I really approached Lee from a place of ‘What is this story? What does she bring to Arthur’s life, for better or for worse?'”.

In fact, this difference can be clearly seen throughout the film. Right at the beginning, for example, Lee appears as a patient at Arkham Asylum, and not as one of the doctors, as presented in “Suicide Squad” and in the comics.
Throughout the plot, however, it is explained that, as described in the comics, Harley has a degree in psychiatry, however, due to his obsession with the Joker, he decided to admit himself to the psychiatric hospital just to be able to have greater contact. with the “idol”.
Furthermore, in the new film, Harley Quinn is not as submissive to the Joker as in the pages of DC and in the version of Margot Robbie — just as the relationship between the two is not represented in as toxic a way as we read in magazines. In the film, despite always supporting the Clown Prince of Crime’s delusions, Lee ends up abandoning the protagonist at the end after he states at his trial that the Joker was nothing more than a fantasy.
